It is certainly interesting how different Kalimdor looks now and how at one point the night elves were literallly just Dark elves.

Suddenly Warcraft 3’s maps make a hell of a lot more sense.

I’m having bad memory but did we ever travel south from Lordaeron?

Are you referring to Warcraft 1/2? Or if we ever travelled south during Warcraft 3?

Hehe, Northrond

Interesting.

They inflated Kalimdor over time to give themselves more room to work with - no big deal there.

One thing I do wish they hadn’t done is make both continents so weirdly symmetrical and rectangular.

The Kingdoms of Khaz Modan and Stormwind had already been established as locations by Warcraft III, yes:

  1. The Last Guardian takes place during the First War, and features Stormwind City while taking place primarily at Karazhan.

  2. Khaz Modan was mentioned in Tides of Darkness, which takes place during the Second War, as the Horde (unsuccessfully) tried to capture Ironforge, before then making Grim Batol their base in the south, from which Doomhammer and Gul’dan were able to launch ships north into Lordaeron.

We also knew of the Blasted Lands, the Dark Portal, and Nethergarde Keep, as well, since these were established as locations between Warcraft II and Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos.

I think I recall in warcraft 2 and 3 focused on Lordaeron but I had a hard time remembering if any events occurred in that series between Lordaeron and the Dark Portal.

Thanks, I had a hard time remembering if there were game maps of that region.

War 3 was exclusively Lordearon/Northrend/Kalimdor. Warcraft 2 had an even split. 1/4 each between Lordearon, Khaz Modan, Quel’thalas and Stormwind(Azeroth).

The “Sunken Lands” are interesting because they imply that Metzen already had an idea about some ancient catastrophe which destroyed large parts of Kalimdor.

The fact Night Elves were to be called Dark Elves really drives home my point in some recent thread about elven naming convention incoherence

It’s also interesting that the image linked by the OP clearly shows an island in the center of map labeled “TOS.”

How much of the original story regarding the Tomb of Sargeras and the Great Sundering was thought out that far back is certainly up for debate, but it seems pretty clear the naming was already in place.

If I remember right, there was a level in WC2 on the horde side where you were sent to the Tomb of Sargeras to stop Guldan and Cho’Gall because their clans had gone rogue. I just remember it being a pita facing the full force of both the Stormreaver Clan and the Twilight’s Hammer clan with our little dinky band of misfits in the corner to create your base and hammer down the victory.

Except it wasn’t Sargeras, but uuhhh Sorgaros :stuck_out_tongue:

(I love Northrond)

What’s that? The original name for the continent was “Keel-em-dear”?

This…explains…EVERYTHING!!! :scream:

Sargeras in WC2 was merely referred to as being Kil’jaeden’s mentor and a Demon Lord that Aegwynn sealed within the Tomb of Sargeras that Medivh tried to access.

Aegwynn in the WC2 Manual didn’t know for sure if Sargeras’s power was still in the Tomb so him surviving his death was part of Warcraft since his first Appearance.

WC2 mentions Sargeras as being a true Monarch of the Underworld. The Underworld is described by WC1 as being the Warlock Cults not the Realm of the Dead which is Hades.

Incidentally WC1 had the Orc Warlocks be literal kin of Hades ruler of Hades.

WC2 describes the Twisting Nether as being a Realm of Chaos so Demons and Chaos were definitely connected just as Orcs were connected to Death and Darkness(which resembles the Darkness in Revendreth) which apparently is separate from Chaos.

Ya but I wasn’t going on the history of Sargeras. I was merely going on Velth’s comment about the name already in place. It was in place as early as 95? 96? When did WC2 come out?

And I honestly don’t remember almost jack all of WC1, other than Blackhand was a dick and the horde won the war cannon wise.

Blackhand was assassinated mid-campaign by order of the Shadow Council.

The Player(Doomhammer according to WC2) of course is threatened with having his head put on a spike by the Mission Briefer(probably Hades) once yet it’s quite clear he is not Blackhand and is backing your overthrow of him!

And still no Undermine…

It was mentioned somewhere by someone recently that Night Elves were envisioned as a combination of the classic DnD drow and foresty nature elves. It was a new idea at the time and apparently, it took a few pitches before the idea was nailed down.
