Mentor System Problems From Blizzards Post

There’s part of your mistake, assuming everyone on the forums is an experienced player. That doesn’t define everyone. People can give good advice. And it will be a moot point with how the system works now as you get flying at 40 and leave the system at 20.

The best part is the Mentor system requires 2 achievements in a list that lists “leveling 3 toons to max” and “having cleared LFR”.

Something I am a little worried about is that new players might not know how to use the chat feature to ask for help. I tried another Blizzard game (I don’t remember which one) and people kept calling me names in chat and I didn’t even know how to ask for help because I didn’t understand the chat box. Will there be something instructing new players how to use the chat box? Or, is there anything like that currently?

I think they should have a trained employee answering questions for new players, and the mentoring system should be for players approaching max level.

lol… what?

once a player hits 20 they’re no longer new to the game? really blizz?

I mean, I have my own concerns about this system, separate from this. This specifically makes no sense.

Surely after a new player has reached level 20, having gotten simple answers for their simple questions from experienced players who have mastered end content, they’ll be eager and ready to rush to max to start working on systems.

One of the concerns I have is that Blizzard didn’t really think this through : for sure it’s going to get trolled.

On exiles reach they have a few quests where they have to type things in the chatbox but I’m not sure if they have an actual channel explanation or anything.

Maybe when they join there will be a little pop up explanation.

I hope so! I felt so embarrassed in the other game, I didn’t even know how to ask what I was doing wrong. I think it would be very helpful to have a feature explaining the chat box to new players!

They should be considered new players until their 1st character reaches max level. They won’t have questions about some things until they actually encounter them in game, and that includes endgame.

reaching level 20 removes newb/noob status? all questions answered? all knowledge gained.

huh…

Yeah, I would assume a player is considered new until the player decides they arent new.

It’s really weird. I mean, a player could use a mentor during leveling, then during raiding, dungeoning, PVP, etc.

My main concern with the mentor system is volunteers that troll newcomers by giving them false information. It is going to happen, and I hope blizz has a way to report these people and revoke their privileges as a guide.

Folks should get to stay until at least level 50 imo.

This is rather disappointing, and I’m really hoping they change it. I was fully intending on involving myself in this program, and I don’t mind helping people through early level stuff (I fully intend to level an alt or two through exiles reach to know more about it, and have already done some as well through the ptr), but the game doesn’t really get daunting until max level, I think that’s where people need help the most since that is WoW’s core strength.

I mean a few things.

If your game is so unintuitive that you require a mentor, then you kind of have a fundamental problem in design I would say.

Also, even today you can ask questions in general and despite all the troll responses, usually you get one or two people to actually whisper you a real answer (or post response in general).

There would be no mentors at the start of Shadowlands than.

Oh please, there will always be people that are confused when they reach the endgame. Unlike you they haven’t been there for all the systems added, it can be quite overwhelming. I’ve seen people even in 8.3 that had no idea what essences or their cloak was.

There would be because it doesn’t count every character, just the ones made on new accounts.

Even I find the insane number of systems confusing at end game, but the mentor system doesn’t go that far level wise … and certainly I don’t think players should have to spend 3 hours walking someone through all of them.

Over-engineering is Blizzard’s problem to solve.

It should likely have some end game component.
