Just wondering if WoW’s engine or server tech or whatever (im not smart with tech) is capable or ever becoming capable of hosting 1 or a couple megaservers the likes of other MMOs such as GW2? I know some of yall have the knowledge to answer this for me. Im not trying spark a debate on whether they should, im just curious if its even possible.
Go to the first day of any world event and you should get your answer. The world will come to a halt, your keys won’t respond, you can’t log out…
Nah i get the lag, in reference to GW2 there’s a set amount of people allowed in a zone then a new instance starts to fill up. Basically shards. Im just asking is it even possible from a technical standpoint or does the engine just not allow it
Tiny step by tiny step over many expansions now, the game has been adding tech that might allow it to disconnect from the concept of individual servers and be one big pool of world instances in the cloud that could be spun up in whatever numbers are needed to hold however many people log on.
But whether that’s an actual goal, whether it’s within reach or whether we’re actually secretly there already, I have no idea.
Megaservers are a terrible idea. I’ve seen them destroy MMORPG communities.
It’s also highly unnecessary and not the route Blizzard is going.
Gotcha, yeah i was just thinking about it, seeings as im on a dead server it just got my mind wandering. And geniuinely didnt know if it was even possible from a technical standpoint.
Blizzard have the tech to connect servers together to form virtual mega servers, but they only use it merge a couple small dead servers. And often they don’t even do that.
How Blizzard operates is a complete mystery.
Coming from venture co i can attest to that statement lol. Definitely helps having a few other realms in the mix but its still very dead. Im not advocating for a megaserver but was curious.
