Medium core realms?

So something that’s come out of Hardcore that I didn’t really expect is that it’s making the game feel a lot closer to how it felt back in 2004-2006. Because of the penalty of dying, folks tend to play more conservatively, and that’s an experience I find enjoyable. While I have nothing against Classic Era, people do tend to play it differently than a lot of us expected.

I’m wondering if there might be value in a middle ground between Classic Era realms and Hardcore realms, where if you die, your character cannot be resurrected for 24 real-world hours. You retain that “consequences of failure” feeling, but you don’t have to completely restart, which makes things like end-game dungeons and raiding more attainable for less dedicated and/or skilled players.

I don’t think we need this any time soon, nor would I propose any change to existing hardcore realms (which should stay as they are), just something that might be an interesting way to play for others some ways down the road.

For those here, what do you think about how HC is played vs. how Era is played, and what are you thoughts on realms with a less severe, but still meaningful penalty for death?

Hardcore has to be played different. I mean everything just matters. Not having a food buff can be yo butt. Forgetting health pots is suicide, this is the first time im worried about having target dummies just to quest, I’m constantly concerned about my position and where I can escape.

Its slower it requires good decision making where situations are constantly changing one wrong misstep can be your last and its glorious.

one rez per week, at downtime.

same as raid bosses.

So true. It’s strange how 1-life someone provokes an older meta.

Blizzard is totally going to make a new server ruleset for every single person who wants to nerf part of hardcore.

This is actually an intriguing idea. The body stays there until server reset on Tuesday and doesn’t get Resurrectable until then. And if you died in a dungeon surrounded by mobs you better hope you have friends willing to come get you.

Lock out the option to chat in game so you can’t spam rez requests?

Not like it will ever happen but it sounds like an entertaining game mode.

This annoyed me way more than it should.

Terrible idea… I’d be hardcapped at about 1 hour per week.

My motivation behind 24 hours was to align with the dungeon cooldown. I don’t think a week is necessary, but it’s also irrelevant tbh. The idea is to just give you an opportunity to keep playing, but keep the consequences of failure looming over your head.

Whether it’s 1 day or a week, it still means the end of your run/raid for that night and to me, that’s interesting.

There is no intention to nerf hardcore. This hypothetical suggestion would be different servers. Hardcore should remain as is. Hardcore can never really be a permanent thing for most people though, not in any kind of end-game sense.

This is a thought-experiment to see if the value that hardcore brings can possibly be merged with the persistent, long-term gameplay that Era brings.

In mine, the only mounts are flying sparkle ponies.

I think you have a great idea here, id be happy even with a 48h or 72h death time.
The fact that you can try a raid without losing it all would open some perspectives. And at the same time you’d still be conservative

Why not just make it instant at that point?

yeah that would be interesting.

My idea for medium core is that a player can only be resurrected by another player. The resurrection spell would also have a very long CD and require an expensive reagent. After being resurrected, that player would have a debuff preventing another resurrection for X period of time.

They should just add rogue like elements such as progressive class talent trees weapon skill unlocks, reputations and maybe professions skills

50 shades of hardcore
