Well, do remember that the Maw was originally purposed for irredeemable souls.
According to my Gnomeregan experience, he betrayed Mekkatorque and is directly responsible for a toxic radioactive disaster that took place there.

Thats a short version of it yes.
He was a rival of Mekkatorque, and during an invasion of Troggs into the city he came up with a plan to irradiate the troggs to save the city. In the process he engineered it so that some of the living areas of the city would also be hit as a way to make Mekkatorque look incompetent.
Unfortunately this backfired on him. The Troggs were not killed and instead seemed emboldened, further his attempts to mess with the delivery system were too effective resulting in almost all of the city being irradiated including himself.
After that he kind of lost his mind. The survivors evacuated to Ironforge and he declared himself king of Gnomeregan.
Just before the Cataclysm Mekkatorque and the other Gnomes of Gnomeregan were in the final stages of operation Gnomeregan to retake the city, but between the sudden cataclysm and Thermapluggâs re-irradiation of the city again, they had to pull back.
Supposedly during Cata we kill him again once and for all and the Gnomes have since been systematically destroying the remaining troggs healing what few irradiated gnomes they can and de-irradiating the city.
In theory large sections of the city have been retaken since but that hasnât been shown very well.

After seeing some cool art of some Mechagnomes, I finally bit the bullet and got over the last hurdle I had to getting them today. I still need to consider what my Mechagnome will be though.
