This is 100% on Ion. He’s made it abundantly clear he hates PvP. I know for a fact AWC gets more views than MDI. The only thing that beats AWC is world first races, and that’s only 1 time per patch.

One could argue that team size is the real reason but, it ain’t like there’s not a potential 4th on pvp team rosters. You could blame that on the team tho and not on the games required team size.
I think the MDI is one tournament, but the AWC games are split into EU and NA? If so that would make sense as it’s 10k per region for the PvP tournaments (so 20k total). Also look here:

900k vs. 750k in favor of PvP. Look I love slamming Blizzard as much as anyone here, but maybe they are trying to make it even? Or I might be missing something.

I Do not PVP but I enjoy watching the AWC its entertaining, I have no desire to watch MDI. To me player versus player is so much harder than learning dungeon mechanics I respect the Good Pvpers because they excel at something I just cant do well. They should get more prize money 
AWC is two seasons long. MDI is only cups and finals.

Do you really think the awc was worth a bigger prize pool? It was almost all mages. So boring.
Lets be clear MDI is actually a good format for competitive gaming with a huge audience where Arena and the AWC isn’t. Arena has never worked for Esports and it will never return to peak numbers.
It’s time for a new format for PvP like 6v6 brawls or something that could attract way better numbers and fits into objective based PvP for competition. Arena 3v3 isn’t it and never will work as long as things like dampening and stalling are part of it. Fans watch and say this is boring and they are right. It’s a death match that doesn’t work.
Now in a 6v6 brawl there would be no dampening it’s easier to balance around 6v6 over objectives. There is a scoreboard and fans can watch and enjoy the game.
I think if they put support into RBGs and made them smaller (6v6 or 8v8), it would be better for viewership and maybe the pvp game overall.

This is 100% what they need to do. I’m a big fan of AWC and watch all the games I can but I’m even getting tired of watching the same teams play the same setups every tourney.
I really think a 6v6 would be fun to watch.
