MDI Needs Pick/Ban Feature

…or at the very least something to spice it up.

As much as I love M+, MDI is always pretty boring to me. Casters are lame and it’s just mirrored comps 99% of the time. Yawn. I see a lot of potential for MDI and I would be really excited if there was some more variety.

What do you guys think about a pick/ban feature like in competitive shooters/MOBAs? The M+ teams enter a phase before everything else where they can choose to save or ban maybe 1 dungeon each from the current pool, but they can also save or ban different CLASSES. If Dawgs knows they can’t match Echo’s current D1 Shadow Priest, they can ban that class and neither team gets to use it.

This would open so much more planning, strategy and interactivity instead of just finding the most busted comp and picking between a handful of routes. Teams need to plan ahead for potential map and class bans, have more players ready to jump in if someone’s class gets banned, which will not only open more classes to run certain dungeons in MDI that usually are not seen but also force new strategies and routes because now all of the sudden they don’t have mass dispel from SPriest so they can’t do certain pulls, etc.

Just a rough idea, I’m sure there is lots of polishing to do. What are your ideas for ways to spice up MDI?

I read what you wrote. I don’t even watch MDI, but this sounds like a bad idea, something from some other game concept that wouldn’t work in wow.

Please explain why you think it wouldn’t work instead of just saying “No.”

Or, just cancel the irrelevant event and put the money into the game. Lame event

Requiring teams to all play multiple different classes just in case the other team decides to vote out their best players.

Lol you already got flagged no need to delete

The last time MDI was fun to watch was in Legion imo. We saw all sorts of comps. Now it’s just sweaty meta comps. Blizz should force comps or let the viewers vote. Would be a lot more fun to watch.

It’s not really different than 90% of competitive games, sports, etc. You have a core team of starters and then you have a bench. If a starter is out, you bring in someone from the bench. You could have a bench with as little as 3-5 players in a scenario like this, with both teams getting the same amount of benched players to pick from.

I agree, watching the exact same comp on every team is very boring. I’ve tried watching it several times but I just can’t get interested.

They already get to ban one dungeon each team out of the lineup. So its a best of three. Then a best of five. The teams are given a list of dungeons and they can each ban one, leaving the remaining as their picks.

Now for banning a class/spec? There has been some variety in this season’s MDI. Teams going no-heal against a 1/1/3 comp. Now what would banning a class/spec do? Well it would not be good for the teams. They already do a lot of prep going into the competition. They gear classes and spec. Several have multiple alts. They practice dungeons with different comps.

Then if each team banned one class/spec that doesnt do much for comp. It means they run the next best option. At the level they play, it is all about practice. CC/Interrupt/Stun rotations. Pull sizes and timing around CD windows.

And negate a lot of practice and gearing. While MDI isnt my favorite thing. Making the teams who do this for not a lot of money, have to practice and prepare more seems like it would just cause less people to play.

I feel this is a veiled attempt to complain that the teams are min/maxed and play a meta that your class/spec is not in. And you want your preferred class/spec to be represented. That doesnt happen in high end competitive content. The current teams playing are all really good. There is a lot of competition there. And to make it more time consuming and difficult to compete, would just cause teams to drop out because its not worth it.

That would leave the sponsored teams only. Because they would be the only ones who just dont have to work and can practice many different comps and strats. You would make the teams competing smaller. And cater to the teams who can just play full time WoW in prep.

I am not totally trying to dump on your idea, but this season’s MDI has a lot of good teams, and is a good competition. I think the MDI is what it is unfortunately. Making higher keys, just makes the runs slower. Adding more complexity or difficulty to preparing just causes teams to drop.

To iterate on your idea to perhaps spice it up maybe randomized comps? In addition to the dungeon line up, the teams are given the same randomized comp. All the class/specs are given identical preset gear.

The issues with this is that they would just try to run fast and safe. No crazy giga pulls onto bosses. No sub 10min dungeons. It would be even more dull.
