Max Layer Size Answer

To answer everyones question about a layers size. 1 layer can only contain a MAX size of 1,000 players. This is because the MAX size of any chat channel in any given zone can only support 1,000 players. You willl only see players in your layer, this is also true for your zone’s chat channels i.e. /1 General

Are we all only ever going to be in the same zone?

Hmm, but isn’t layering supposed to be taken out after phase1? Will they increase the chat channel size when that happens?

I doubt it.

yeah, when there’s a streamer around or if you want to raid a city/pvp in southshore tarren mill. there will be dedicated layers, ask for an invite.

But how would that work? When layering is gone and if there are over 1000 people in SW, will some people not be able to talk in general?

And during layering, if the chat is layered too, your telling me when I try to sell my dungeon runs in /trade, most of the players in the city won’t see the message since we will all be split in multiple layers? That hurts the server economy a lot. Not My Classic.

I think we need Todd Howard to come on here and tell us how layering works

It just works

Your 1000 member limit only applies to Private channels.

  1. Every time they’ve been asked, they’ve said they will have populations like Vanilla, i.e. 2-3k per layer.

  2. You’re working on a flawed assumption, since a) public chat channels are no limited to 1000 and never have, and b) not everyone in a layer is in the same zone, so even if there was a 1000 member limit, it wouldn’t be reached because people are not all in the same zone.

  3. All layers are participating in the same channel, so it wouldn’t matter if they had 9x 1k layers, or 3x 3k layers, the same number of people will be in the public channel.

This is incorrect.

Everything we’ve seen to date says that people will be communicating across layers quite handily.

Also, the key point was that your 1000 player limit doesn’t apply to public channels, only Private ones. Without that, your argument falls apart.

There is a cap. Just like there is a cap for max players per server i.e. Logon Ques

There is a cap on the Private Channels created by players. There is not a cap on the number of people in a General or Trade channel, because server populations were never so high as to need it. You never had all 3000 people in cities at the same time, but they certainly didn’t cap it so that only some people could talk if that many did enter cities. That would be insane. How would you select who can or can’t talk?

Im saying that there is a cap with the layering system.

Chat channels are layer agnostic.

And I’m saying prove it with source material.

The claim that layers will be no greater than 1000 players because of channels is already destroyed. If you have proof that Blizzard has confirmed layers are no greater than 1000 players, I want to see it, because it changes our understanding of the situation.

The status quo they have stated in many places is Vanilla realm populations per layer. If you have proof otherwise, put up or shut up. The burden of proof is with you.

Layering is at its core the same tech as sharding, they have made changes to certain aspects to limit the downsides of sharding(physical size and population size). And chat channels very clearly cross shards, so it would make sense that chat channels are cross layer which is exactly what we saw on the beta and the stress tests.

THis thread = facebook science.

Players on different layers can not see each other physically. This is the same with how chat channels work.

It actually isn’t.
