Mature Language Filter: Add a Disclaimer

I really think a lot of trouble would be avoided if a tooltip or a pop up box was added when Enabling & Disabling the Mature Language Filter

The tooltip/pop up box should inform players that use of profanity ingame is against TOS, regardless of the Mature Language Filter, and may result in account action

This may clear the misconception that “profanity ingame is okay because those that don’t want to see it have a filter they can enable”

The fact that this issue keeps getting brought up every couple of weeks shows that this is not common knowledge

If Blizzard doesn’t want profanity used in their game by players then they have every right as a company to restrict that, but they should make that super clear

In the real world, a lot of people use profanity like every day words, almost part of their vocabulary (anyone from rougher neighborhoods or veteran grandparents are most likely familiar). It should be very clear that this is not accepted ingame so people can self adjust the way they speak

I’m not speaking as some “holier than thou” figure either, I had to learn the hard way that Blizzard doesn’t accept profanity ingame, regardless of context or if its directed towards another player, and i’ve since then adjusted the way I speak ingame

Also, I didn’t learn this by getting my account actioned, putting fourth an appeal, and receiving a auto-generated copy/paste GM reply telling me to refer to the TOS

I learned this by receiving a very professional and clear reply from a GM who straight up told me that I was actioned because of profanity. From there on, the problem was clearly identified, and as a result I was able to adjust my behavior.

I cuss all the time in game and never seem to have an issue.

Throughout TBC & WOTLK I never had issues, it was pretty rampant

I come back for Shadowlands and deff had a culture shock, got muted for the first time and was humbled lol

Maybe it depends on the server :man_shrugging:

I just refrain from it in all forms at this point tho to avoid more account strikes

They added the disclaimer already.

It’s in the terms you agreed to before playing.

In before somebody says “nobody reads that stuff” and then you respond “well if they don’t read that, what makes you think they would read a disclaimer”

You just haven’t been reported, that’s all. Blizzard doesn’t actively police players’ language, they rely on player reports instead.

Other thread too long for ya?

Honestly if someone is too dense to understand that disabling the language filter doesn’t give them free reign to say anything and everything they want, I’m glad it’s getting them banned. I don’t want them here if they have no intention of not being toxic.

I’m willing to say, ‘Swearing like a drunken sailor publicly’ doesn’t require a reminder that it violates ToS.

You don’t go into some public place of business and just start swearing and using choice words unless you fully expect to be asked to leave.

Usually to be actioned for language you need to be overly aggressive towards others, or be causing a public scene, usually through public chat channels. As stated by myself and others the fact a mature language filter exists does not excuse overly crass language.

Publicly, behave like you would at any other place of business. Be as crass as you want with your friends, but you shouldn’t subject strangers to that sort of thing.

Imo the issue people have is they don’t seem to understand that what they are saying publicly is disgusting / toxic, and they think it’s only reported because they used a “no no word”

What people say, and the context, to me is the more important thing.

I agree. I don’t report people for using profanity unless they are being toxic and attacking another player

Maybe you should just read the Terms of Service before hitting the “I Accept” button. Do you normally sign documents without reading a word on them?

If the players actually read the ToU, they would know this, and I suspect they do already know this. They wanna be edgy. Any players claiming otherwise is lying.

Yup. You could be affirmative and positive and friendly towards people using curse words. (Sparingly perhaps)

Then there are those people who are negative, aggressive, trollish, disruptive… sometimes they curse and sometimes not, but I report them all just the same.

That’s not always the case, for example people frequently use profanity in place of the word ‘oops’. That’s against the rules and I report it like everything else, but it’s not toxic.

Just do what everyone else does:

Download and install Discord and talk however you please somewhere other than in Blizzard’s little game platform. If someone approaches you in game, be polite and use the exact minimum possible amount of words to conclude the interaction.

Bah you beat me to it!

Cursing in private channels is one thing. I doubt anyone is going to complain about their friends’ language. However, in public channels it is different. Just remember that little kids do play this game. Yes the filter is there, but its upon you to act like it isn’t. There is no free speach in this game.

Or…maybe blizz should add a disclaimer “if you disable mature language filter you are waiving any ability to report or complain about profanity”

Stop normalizing censurship of basic words bc some people think theyre bad. Words are words. You have the tools to not see them and its enabled by default if words hurt your feelings

Why?

Why is it unacceptable?

Cute how people generally believe/think nobody will report others just for the sake of being a jerk…like it doesnt exist :expressionless:
