Massive stutters with DF client

Before prepatch, I’ve had a buttery smooth game. I play on maxed settings, 1080p hard-limited to 60fps, V-Sync on.

After prepatch dropped, I’ve started experiencing micro-stutters in certain situations. Walking around an area with a lot of players was causing very short fps drops, but it wasn’t that severe. It was mostly jarring because of the sudden 60fps → 58fps → 60fps jump. It seemed to be connected to the camera movement - stutters were more severe when moving the camera, especially after an action or a change of state (combat → out of combat transition, jumping). The more assets had to load suddenly, the more severe stutter. But it wasn’t that severe, most likely due to my monster rig. It almost exclusively happened in Orgrimmar and Oribos. Combat outside of those places caused no stutter.

The prepatch is also the time when I started seeing issues with assets loading in-game. NPCs, environmental assets (trees, benches, random stuff on tables, ya know) and gathering nodes (both models in-game and minimap blips) started appearing much later. Previously they were loaded from a much greater distance. Now it looks as if the distance was roughly halved. It’s especially visible when entering a city/town area with a lot of small models on tables and whatnot. It also very negatively impacts gathering - often models and minimap blips load AFTER the character has already moved past their spot. They visibly pop in at half the usual distance. It’s very jarring.

Now, the main issue is that I’ve experienced the same amount of stutter during the whole prepatch. But in Dragon Isles… it’s severely worse! The micro-stutter there is just regular stutter, it happens much more often, even entering an area with a different name (that title that appears on screen and above the minimap) triggers a stutter. FPS can now drop by up to 30, in my case, and a 1-second jump 60 → 30 → 60 feels like a micro freeze at times. The drops are slightly longer. They’re the most severe in heavily populated areas, when entering new areas, when exiting combat. Especially when exiting combat and in Valdrakken.

The combat is weird, because entering combat and during combat it’s fine. But the moment combat ends or a mob dies mid-combat during a pack pull, the game stutters heavily for up to 2 seconds. Looting a corpse also triggers a stutter, especially if it’s being done right after combat ends or during combat. Camera work triggers stutter, NPC gossip options triggering /say dialogue also can stutter.

The asset load is worse as well. What’s strange is that it happens the same no matter my settings, no matter my graphics drivers. I’ve went through a few already and all run the same, performance doesn’t change. Dragonriding doesn’t seem to make it worse, it’s just bad all the time.

Here’s my rig, it clearly shouldn’t cause any issues aside from regular Intel/AMD/NVidia nuances: Ryzen 9 5900X, RTX 3080, a bunch of SSDs (system and WoW on M2 NVMe), 32GB RAM 3200 CL16. No custom OC, everything uses stock presets with enabled boosting on Ryzen and stock XMP profile with slight voltage changes for system stability.

The stutter is so severe that I’d probably quit the game if I were a PvPer. It seems unplayable in high-reaction scenarios like that. I find this a very major game-breaking issue that should be top priority to fix.

Want to let anyone know to absolutely try deleting all add ons/ delete curseforge and overwolf do the UI reset. Worked for me redownloaded all my add ons without issue game is finally play able.

Edit after a little bit with add ons redownloaded started having issues again not as bad but noticeable.

Didn’t work for me. I’ve yeeted all my addons and even removed WTF folder, scan + repaired the game, I’ve never used Overwolf. Nothing helped, the performance is exactly the same.

Might help someone else ofc, I’m just saying my issue persists.

By the way, after I gave it some thought, I’m almost certain that it was still a prepatch-like micro-stutter at the start of exploring the Dragon Isles, as in - it was small and didn’t affect the combat in most areas. Then, there was a 1hr maintenance in the morning in Europe (I’m playing EU, it was about 9-10am CET). After this maintenance the micro-stutter turned into a regular heavy stutter I’ve described in my previous post. So, the point when it started to work severely worse on my PC was after that maintenance. Did it break something? It shouldn’t, right?

I don’t even notice any weird spikes in my CPU and GPU activity nor temps. It seems stable, yet the game randomly drops 30 frames for 1 second after combat ends.

I would like to retract a bit I redownloaded my add ons and after a bit i started noticing slight issues again nothing like before hand but slight when flying around into zones , I will edit my post. There is a clear issue with the game loading areas and causing fps crashes.

There is a 100% issue with the game in it’s current state, that wasn’t a problem prior to 10.0.0, with stutter when loading in assets as well as draw distance for asset loading. It isn’t a MASSIVE issue which is why EVERYONE isn’t on here complaining, but those of us who are used to a smooth gaming experience are finding this short but noticeable micro-stutters to be intolerable. No amount of troubleshooting on the client side is going to solve this; it’s a 100% Blizzard issue.

That’s not to say that there are others who are having stuttering issues caused by corrupted OS or game files, faulty addons, sub-minimum spec PCs, for which troubleshooting will have a positive affect in most cases, but this is not the issue that this 1K+ thread is seeking to get rectified.

I’m definitely complaining and whining right now. The 9th expansion, and Blizz STILL can’t get a release right. I can’t even get into the game now, it just stalls on the loading screen. Data from 20 years and ya’ll STILL can’t get a release right. Come on now.

It taking ten years for anyone else to loot stuff?

Not sure if my problem is the same as everyone else but what I am seeing is erratic fps 120-160(capped) Normally I wouldn’t think that would be crazy noticeable but when I spin my camera there is a “stutter” only across assets a few yards away from my toon. After tying all the fixes, I discovered when dropping my view distance and environment details to 1! everything is smooth. It doesn’t feel good because it’s kind of a crap way to enjoy the game and my pc should be powerful enough with I7 12700H and 3070TI (Laptop)

All that to say, I’m hoping there’s some issue going on with the view distances like some have suggested.

Just coming back to game to checkout Dragon life, I’ve died 3 times to mobs, takes 2 minutes to turn in quests or talk to NPCs. Definitely not playable like this. Had no issues during the initial dragon isles or in Orgrimmar, but as soon as the trip back happend, that’s when the issues started. Rig is Asus rog strix x570 with 5800, Asus rog strix 2080TI, multiple M.2 SSD with OS and Wow on it, 32gig ram. Guess I’ll go back to New World until this one is fixed…

I mean. All I can really say is I hope the horrible asset pop in/view distance issues some of us are dealing with is included in the efforts that blue mentioned here cause. Hard for me to enjoy the game I’ve paid for right now. By right I should get a refund right now. I’m only holding out cause Im a long time wow player. Since classic. So it goes without saying that I’m well aware of how crappy this game can get. But this is a whole new level and I’m not gonna want to hold out for too much longer.

Still getting massive stutters, mostly around using dracthyr breath abilities, but occasionally when looting/turning in quests.

It will hang for several seconds, one fix seems to be hitting Windows Key twice, or alt tabbing to chrome and back again, the stutter goes away. It happens quite frequently though, about 15+ times an hour

KB5020044 is out now for Windows 11 22H2:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/november-29-2022-kb5020044-os-build-22621-900-preview-43f0bdf9-0b75-4110-bab3-3bd2433d84b3

It addresses an issue that affects some games and applications. This issue is related to GPU performance debugging features. This lowers the expected game performance.

Test it out and see if it makes a difference. I noticed that OW2 got through it’s ridiculous “loading” phase, when you first open the client, in like 10 seconds vs the minutes that it would normally take for the frame rate to stop looking like a 9.0 on the Richter scale. Don’t have time to test out WoW and other games right now, but I’ll update tomorrow after some experimentation.

Will be interesting to see if this has any noticeable improvement.

I got my stagger problem fixed, but the solution/problem seems pretty silly for me.

First I experienced 8fps with my RTX3080 after the mini update today. I tried the different suggestion but none of them helped unfortunately.

Then I log in again and went through all my graphic setting 1 by 1 then found, for some reason, after the mini update, my “Max Foreground FPS Toggle” bar was set all the way to min. on the left (which is exactly 8FPS), I don’t remember I had ever set that, I highly suspect it was the patch changed my setting somehow.

After I set it back to 120FPS, the stagger problem gone. Not sure if this is also the case for some of you.

well i haven’t tested yet in high stress situations, but i did that and the game is playable at least, despite still having some issues.
i deleted curseforge/overwolf, wtf, interface and icons (skin i had installed) folders. i suggest making a backup before deleting those folders.
fps went from <30 to 60-100 depending the zone. still experiencing some stuttering and fps drops eventually tho. i’m playing now only with elvui and details.
i wouldn’t say its a fix yet, requires more testing, but it helped me

i believe the mini update i had fixed some of it, at least it wasnt that heavy, on the other side there is not many people on at this time so cant be completely sure

I got two test systems at work with Windows 10 (AMD/AMD, Intel/Nvidia) and a customer today that wanted Win10 on their gaming PC (I’m located in EU for anyone wondering). I read that blue post and there’s no difference between today or yesterday. Still same stutters when players appear or entering combat, lower fps overall, longer loading times and pop-ins as well. Opening guild page/bags first time on login adds a short freeze.

I’ve also been getting a freeze when opening bag or talent window or guild pane as well. On top of the other stuttering/hitching/frame drops when loading in assets.
