Massive GPU lag spikes

I’m getting this as well since upgrading to Win10, it never had issues on Win7. Massive, five-second spikes sporadically in large areas, occasional spikes and then disconnects when turning. What happened?
It’s a fresh install, all nvidia drivers are up to date, etc.

Hey there,

I went ahead and moved your post to your own thread so we can check on your individual issue.

When the spikes occur do you notice any drop in FPS or increase in latency? Mouse over the Help menu icon on the bar at the bottom to check those if you aren’t sure.

If it’s a connection related issue that’s causing the disconnects, I’d go ahead and run a WinMTR so we can get a look at the connection.

  1. Download WinMTR
  2. Right-click on the downloaded .zip folder and select “Extract All”, to extract the files to a new folder.
  3. Open the new folder that was created, then open the WinMTR_x64 folder.
  4. Right-click on the WinMTR application and select “Run as administrator”.
  5. Type the IP address 137.221.105.2 in the “Host” field.
  6. Click on “Start” and then launch the game. Allow the test to run for at least 10 minutes or more until the issue occurs. Click on “Stop” when you’re done playing after you have experienced the latency or connection issue.
  7. Click on “Copy Text to Clipboard”, paste the results here, then highlight everything and hit the </> button in the posting section so it will allow links.

I’ve been monitoring it as it happens, and see no tangible change in latency, but FPS obviously drops to nil as it’s sitting still for 5 or so seconds, doing whatever it’s doing. When the lagspikes do happen, it definitely shows on my GPU, as just a massive, 100% use spike in the 3D graph, for seemingly no reason.

As for the MTR results, here they are anyway:

Ok cool, so it does sound like a video issue rather than something connection related. Thanks for the WinMTR, it looks fine.

Which DirectX version are you using? Check in-game under System → Advanced → Graphics API

Also can you post your DXDIAG?

  1. Press Windows Key + R.
  2. In the Run window type dxdiag and press Enter.
  3. In the DirectX window, click Save All Information.
  4. Name the file “dxdiag” and save it to your Desktop. Open the new dxdiag file with Notepad.
  5. In the posting section hit the </> button for “Preformatted text” then paste (Ctrl+V) the DXDIAG contents. That’ll make the information much more readable.

If you are unable to post this due to the length of the DXDIAG, please feel free to use pastebin.com and share the direct link with us instead. Use the </> button as well in order to share the link.

My fresh install (done yesterday) comes with dx12, but here’s the pastebin:

  1. Event Name: LiveKernelEvent

  2. Response: Not available

  3. Cab Id: 0

  • Problem signature:
  1. P1: 141

In the Windows error reporting section there’s repeated LiveKernelEvent code 141 showing up, which indicates either a problem with the GPU or GPU drivers. These most likely correspond with the freezes that you’re seeing in-game. Lets try wiping the Nvidia drivers with Display Driver Uninstaller and reinstalling them to see if that helps any.

  1. Download DDU here
    • Click on the first link under “Announcements” titled Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU). Then click the “Official Download Here” link to start the download.
  2. Run the .exe file and extract the contents to the default location. Open the new folder and run the Display Driver Uninstaller.
  3. You will get a pop-up saying it is recommended to reboot in Safe Mode, feel free to ignore this if you are not familiar with how to get into Safe Mode. To start the removal process, click on the driver type on the right side first, then click “Clean and restart”
  4. Once the PC restarts, go ahead and download the current drivers here: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/results/162983/
  5. Run the driver installer and use the default/recommended install steps.

If it’s still happening after that, try enabling Debug mode in the Nvidia Control Panel and then test again.

That may not be necessary. While waiting for this response, I noticed in the other thread something you said that I failed to take into account: advanced game settings were set for dx11. Since setting it properly to dx12, I have yet to notice the issue, even while bashing a bunch of target dummies, flying full-speed through a populated Boralus and Stormwind, and loading Legion Dalaran, which is notoriously slow to load.
I feel like a dummy myself for not noticing that little dropdown box, but it actually seems to be fixed now. I’ll keep the driver wiping option in mind in case it surfaces again. Have some of my likes.
