I agree, the servers are basically split 50/50. Half with thousands in queue half with none in queue. Offer free transfers for a short time and even incentivize if you have to. Just try to get a good chunk of dedicated players and each realm and even out that population.
free transfers to select realms arent a ‘modern solution’. They literally happened in vanilla shortly after release. we did the illidan > stonemaul xfers to escape the massive queues on illidan way back when. this is perfectly in line with vanilla.
It’s more than that, I won’t switch unless I can have my names picked.
Not to be that spacegoat, but they did say the could do it, but it poses the massive risk that queues will continue into phase two and they are emphatic they dont want to have (even if only to accommodate the classic playerbase) to layer beyond phase 1. Imagine the hellscape of queues in phase 2 due to them introducing a single layer (and protecting the MASSIVE trust they have with classic players - and they genuinely have it by the way) during phase 2.
Thing is, there are waay bigger things happening right now than just a massive launch day queue. I love (and trust) these folks. I have worries (genuine - third oceanic pvp server release) that they might be taking their eye off the prize (third oceanic realm release). But im willing to bet that…
a) they have the data and have crunched it.
b) they wont leave that third realm stranded.
c) that second realm was ALWAYS coming. (and they should have done it sooner - no argument there).
d) there will be the drop off that everyone participating in classic forums on its release, expected.
bonus e) that drop off will happen. But once the cyclical subs hit the wall in vanilla, (8.3 and the inevitable long wait to 9.0), they will be back, play a while and end up engaged (on a far more stable server pop without the necessity of layering.
Here’s my stupid prediction: Classic release will be a dumpster fire. It will see a massive drop off due to ‘difficulty’ (yeah i know!). Many players will go back to retail wow or absolutely anything else. In 8.25 it’ll see a second exodus and general will go nuts. But after 8.3 ties everything up (or even 8.35) you’ll see players slowly gravitate to classic again… i mean they still have 20 days on their sub, why not? They’ll start questing, find a bored level 60 hanging about deadmines willing to boost them, and get hooked (until the next expansion - or pre expansion patch).
This is why i have absolute faith in Ion, (guaranteed he’s playing classic and racing for world first and understands the game), and why i have shares at 50.8 right now (DCA) in ATVI. Classic is bringing something amazing to the blizzard stable. They know it. I know it. You’re going to be playing this game in retail wow downtime. Youre going to hold that sub. Classic is something way beyond loot boxes, live services and all that crap we think we are immune to. Its a genuine trip. It’s why im Hodling well beyond blizzcon. Im not your financial adviser, but if you have a spare grand lying about and a robinhood account…
Really don’t want server transfers already, but it’s the only thing I see as possible. The RP-PvP realm is going to be especially bad. All the RP-PvPers are there because we fought so hard and have already established communities before the game even went live.
Absolutely right. They’re panicking. I reckons the 13 or so realms they had in mind a while back are spot on. I’d urge them to weather the storm, look at the data and make a RATIONAL decision on servers further down the line based on genuine long term demand - and avoid splitting the CORE playerbase (but oceanic ALWAYS needed at least 2 pvp servers - as does korea).
Why do you need free server transfers? You’re like level 10ish maybe 20ish? Simply start over on new server… It’s only been a day.
Ahh. I was confused then.
Yeah you hit the nail on the head, I’m on Grob along with the entire RP-PvP community and no one is going to reroll on DD. Only way some of the community will move is if server transfers open. Otherwise Grob will continue to be overpopulated and DD will die a ghosttown.
If your guild/friends list collectively was too stupid to heed a warning of, “Hey, if you stay here expect long queues, and often…” then that’s on you guys. I don’t think Blizzard has developed an account service that teaches people how to read or anything.
f your guild/friends list collectively was too stupid to heed a warning of, “Hey, if you stay here expect long queues, and often…”
Well, except many people did move. And in turn were greeted with more queues on the newer realms. Stalagg had a 20k queue last night and blizzard BEGGED people to move there.
People are stupid, not arguing that point, I’m just suggesting a viable solution haha.
When I hit a 12k queue (Blaumeux), I switched over to Kirtonos and logged in instantly. It won’t be a permanent toon, but I was planning to roll Horde on PvP so looks like Kirtonos will be my Alliance toons’ home. Later at night, I tried Blau again and got a 3k queue (20 mins)- much more manageable and I got to level my presumptive main toon for 3ish hours. If you insist on the Full servers at/during launch, you get the “Full servers at/during launch” experience.
Just start another character, it’s not like you need a transfer for your level 7 shaman tauren.
Theyve done them in the past off of dead realms, as well as some off of extremely overpopulated realms. Just cause you didnt play back then doesnt mean it never happened
I’m sure they will offer transfers in a few months one the pop stabalizes and they have an understanding of the demand
transfers for what?
level 1 characters? just create a new one
your name will have to be redone for it is aleady taken anyway
Sure when there were a hundred realms.
It’s been a day lol. The first 10 levels are quick anyways.
I saw such free guild transfers in TBC and they did nothing good. My server was healthy, but a streamer guild came over. Their fanboys came as well, we had queues.
Once Sunwell was done, that guild left the server and we were doomed. Never did it recover…
Mass transfers are not good for server communities, they can destroy whole servers, as streamers and their sheep will abuse it like they did back then. It also allows it, to ring the gong first, by moving to a low pop server or having it easier to get Rank 14 or just buy / sell stuff at the AH.
Transfers must be limited and highly restricted.
