Mass complaints about "Weakaura Bosses."

As the title indicates, there have been massive amounts of complaints about there always being a “weakaura boss” for each tier. Normally those are end tier bosses, and I get needing a lot of setup for those. This tier, Ovi’nax is that boss. If one person has a different weakaura or DBM/BigWigs announcing on top of whatever weakaura pack your group chose, things are going to get out of hand easily. I also understand them trying to make bosses way harder than they used to be because they want the RWF to not be over in a few days.

That being said, why is this kind of setup needed for a mid-tier boss? I understand wanting to make Mythic hard, but this boss isn’t actually that hard, it’s just getting the weakauras/addons setup just right for all 20 people so they work in unison and keeping adds under control. I feel like this could have been a better boss design and it wouldn’t require this much setup. Like maybe making the circles be sets of different colors or something. A change that small could make all the difference. We’ll still handle breaking w/e eggs we deem need broken, but when you feel like you’ve made major prog and then all of a sudden on the 5th add break it chooses one person who doesn’t have things set up properly things can get out of hand quickly. (“Just get that one person on track, hyuck!” - yep, we’ve been doing this, roster boss makes us redo it every week.)

People also have seen a crazy amount of disconnects this expansion and a lot of times when you experience that a lot and put a ticket in about it, the rep will usually ask if you’re running addons and if you are they’ll tell you to turn them off. The problem is, addons are almost required to play the game at a higher level anymore. Why not just add things to the game so we don’t need them?

The TDLR is basically this - can we create bosses that don’t require hours worth of weakaura setups? Like I said before, if that’s needed for an end tier boss, that’s understandable - it’s supposed to be the hardest. But why require all of that for a mid tier boss?

Usually it’s because bliz want a communication boss then don’t tune the mechanic around a reasonable timeframe for players to communicate in.

Ultimately you could have done Ovinax’s mechanic with a simple ordered list and just said “1-2 purple, 3-4 square, 5-6 star, 7-8 triangle” but better tools exist so you don’t.

It’s the same mechanic as echo of neltharion, just unprivated.

Echo of Neltharion in season 2 was the worst boss when it comes to mechanics and weakauras. Sure Tindral and Fyrakk were more difficult, but Echo wins when it comes to the most annoyingly convoluted mechanic for me.

Good point. I definitely understand wanting that “communication boss.” I just feel like it could be designed better where it wouldn’t need to require all of these external addons in the first place. I know this has been a complaint for years in general, but it does feel like it’s getting out of control with how many are needed for certain bosses. I feel like them not just building it into the game and needing to find outside sources for things like this is contributing to a lot of problems. Without them, it turns into 8 people trying to talk over each other while simultaneously pinging “I’m going there!”

Mythic Smolderon with the Orb clears was rough for our guild since the aura was private and you needed a macro AND a weak aura.

We downed Mythic Silkran last night. Setting up the simulacrums was a nightmare.

What weakauras are there for sikran? You just drop the things off in a square then keep an eye on if you get decimate to break them after.

We didn’t use any. But it could’ve been used to mark players with icons and the icon will always get into certain positions.

saying you “just” drop them in a square is a bit of an understatement. There seems to be a game of chicken people play about moving out of other peoples way, or it glitches and gives you a circle but no line and you don’t know if you should be in front or not.

But it has red lines the help you determine the order which people are getting charged. So long as you aren’t running a charge through somebody in the square, there are multiple different combinations people can arrange themselves provided who ever is getting charged first is in the front row in most cases.

I get the idea you’re going for but at that point its just the game doing what we would have done with a weakaura if it wasn’t a Private Aura.

Right, it was prog up until it was downed for us last night. So the practice and improvement did happen. Our issue was when we all got mark, us rushing over there we had plenty of people panic or not move thinking the other person would move. ooooor both people would move and the sims would overlap.

I don’t do mythic raiding anymore so maybe I don’t belong here but I will say this

At no point in the Heroic NP did I ever feel like DBM or WAs were needed. Nearly all of the abilities are telegraphed with either long cast times, voice lines, indicators, or auras.
The only boss that may need communication is Court for the swarms, but even then the ping system works wonders.

I do feel though taht DBm and WAs have made players less attentive to what is happening in the fight. Sure, its nice to have things yell at you, but then you’re just waiting for a “go here, do this, stand there” might as well press buttons to use abilities and make a WA that can play the rest for you,.
This may be different in Mythic.

Like this tier for the most part every mythic fight (though I can’t speak on Queen really) except Ovinax is still just “use your eyes and play the game” type fights with weakauras doing very little to help you. Court has a teleprompter type weakura telling how to move for the first intermission for example but if you don’t fundamentally understand the movement already it does nothing for you. Even though I despise Ovinax being designed around using a few different auras and stuff (for egg breaks and worm interrupts) it’s still full of reactive play and requires your group to be ready to communicate to problem solve at times say for CCs or interrupts.

2000+ guilds stuck on Ovi’nax. No amount of finery will likely fix that. The tier is just over for 2000 guilds who are likely going to struggle through or disband. Additional nerfs (which are absolutely coming) will have come too late.

It’s a terrible boss. This plus M+ being in the worst shape it’s likely ever been in is going to cause an absolute exodus of players at the end of this tier.
