Marksman vs. Survival

Recently I’ve decided to level a hunter, but I’m not sure on the spec I want to play endgame.

I really like survival, and marksman. They’re both pretty fun for me, so I’m wondering, how do they fare in Mythics at this point?

I rarely see any hunter that isn’t BM, so I haven’t really seen how they perform at Max level.

Are they viable? Do they struggle to keep up?

I don’t need to be top dps all the time, as long as I can do my job at an acceptable level I’ll be ok

Survival is pretty garbage, MM is near the higher end of mid tier in raid specifically, BM is just the best all rounder, really good in m+ and high mid tier in raid.

I played BM hunter all of BFA to this point but was thinking of switching to Survival for 8.2.
Is there a reason you’re saying they’re garbage? The DPS ranking on Noxxic put them pretty high for the current patch…

Never use Noxxic, they are unreliable, use wowgraphs.

SV is garbage only due to Hunters hating it for be melee and not range.
You can kill targets fast, has utility, and very mobile over other melee specs.
Should try it out yourself before listening to anyone else.

Noxxic is a no-no.

SV is bad in PvE because it’s melee. Raids have limited melee spots and using one of them on a melee spec with the same utility as its class’s ranged specs is a handicap. If its damage were a lot higher it could make up for that, but MM is both ranged and higher DPS. In M+ melee fares better, but Survival’s problem there is a) it’s overshadowed by BM in both DPS and utility, and b) Survival’s priorities for AoE and ST are more separate than other specs.

It’s not just a subjective thing. Melee is legitimately a handicap in raids. Melee spots are always limited due to encounter design so you want to spend those spots on melee classes that bring unique utility, like Demon Hunters. Its worse when you have to justify picking the melee spec that barely outperforms the fully mobile ranged spec with the same utility in the same class.

If you aren’t doing high end content any of the classes will do just fine.

I love Survival, but it gets a bit tricky getting into groups as you progress into Heroic raiding. My Outlaw Rogue gets accepted pretty quickly where as my SV Hunter can seemingly take ages to get accepted into a group despite doing higher damage.

Exactly, if your looking to enjoy yourself then play whichever spec that you find funnest.
Do not let anyone tell you what you “should” be playing. Numbers only matter if you trying to get in top tier raid spots. Otherwise play and have fun.

Faring well in mythic content is itself a criteria for a fun spec for some people.

I had a lot of fun with WoD Survival. A lot of us did. That didn’t change the fact that it was absolutely a no-go for PvE content as of 6.2 and I would have told any new player that regardless of how fun the spec was. It stops being fun once you’re holding your group back.

I’m not saying any spec is that bad but I am pointing out how being fun and being viable are not separate issues. Hell, for some people being optimal is part of being fun.

We are fortunate that none of the classes have been truly terrible lately. There always has to be a worst performing class, but the difference isn’t as vast as it’s been in the past.

SV and BM are both A tier PvP specs. Raiding is for the birds.

Surv very strong. A huge weakness for sv is their pets. If their pets get killed or stuck they are useless. I usually pull decent damage in my raid group or bgs. Never number one but close sometimes.

I don’t have anything on MM. You just don’t have a pet to tank for you.

Actually you do have your pet to do that and up to a point, pre-400 ilvl (if I remember right but I don’t really play MM) or so, it’s better for single target. After that, it’s a Utility versus Damage thing.
