Marks of Honor Grind Unfun and Unfair

Blizzard must re-introduce Marks of Honor from world quests or the upcoming Assault events, similar to the old “PVP towers” that allowed you to get 4 marks of honor per alt on a regular basis for 2 minutes of slightly-riskier PVE work.

Marks of Honor are now more about transmog collecting and profession recipes than they are about PVP, and it is in the realm of professions that they are the largest problem.

I hate PVP and yet I diligently grinded out nearly 200 Marks of Honor for my LW, tailor, and blacksmith. I honestly could not be bothered to finish it out for engineering, JC, etc. because I was so sick of maybe winning a match and maybe getting marks. To find that I have to do the same thing every content update as the recipes are upgraded is absolutely disgusting.

This expansion has two notable aspects to it:

  • It’s themed around a faction war and much of the content is WQ, yet we don’t have a faction-war themed WQ similar to Legion towers? Why not?
  • It’s been stated that Blizz wants people to feel incentivized to PVP, such as extra rewards for war mode, but not forced into it. And yet they are forcing us into PVP by tying non-PVP recipes (without resilience and without “PVE” versions not tied to marks, these recipes aren’t “pvp gear”) to PVP gating.

It simply makes no sense and is unfun for people who don’t already enjoy PVP.

Further, on the point of fairness. With regard to the Warden towers, as I’ve stated they were a rich source of marks, which sadly I didn’t have the foresight to take advantage of before they were removed. However, may people were smarter than me, and I have guildies sitting on literally thousands of marks of honor from Legion. These people never PVPd either, they were just willing to grind world quests longer than I was. More power to them, but it leaves players who missed Legion at an extreme disadvantage for filling out their professions.

We either need Marks of Honor to be introduced to WQ or assaults, similar to how it was in Legion (or added back to old Legion towers, though I doubt that would happen), or we need a different system for ranking up our decidedly-not-PVP-specific crafting recipes.

Edited: I am going to leave the above in-tact so the progression of the thread makes sense, but for any joiners, note that I have revised my stance based on discussions in this thread.

I think it’s important in this discussion that we all recognize people are discussing two different questions:

  1. Should Marks of Honor come from x ?
  2. Should professions be gated behind PVP? (Some people are extending this to transmog as well.)

I think both questions are worthy of discussion, so y’all keep discussing as you’d like, but as the OP I want to clarify that the issue I have is that non-PVP content (profession advancement) is gated behind PVP content.

My proposal in the OP was just to bring back fast and easy PVP content so that we could still progress professions without needing to do arenas, BGs, etc. for weeks on end. However, in reading this thread and others’ ideas I’ve realized my original proposal was a bandaid. “If you’re going to PVP-gate non-PVP stuff, give us easier PVP currency routes.”

Not a bad idea, but I absolutely agree with what others have stated: It shouldn’t be gated behind PVP currency at all. Some options already in-game:

  • We’ve seen some things (Monel-Hardened Hoofplates, Coarse Leather Barding, etc.) pushed to world drop recipes, we’ve of course always seen higher rank things on rep vendors. That would make much more sense.
  • Put Rank 2’s at honored/revered and Rank 3 at exalted. This would also take away the pain of having to regrind something every content patch.

Considering there’s no longer a PvP vendor and I really enjoyed the little bit of PvP with those PvP world quests, I’d like to see this too.

Maybe just reintroduce PvP world quests. Or something. But since MoH don’t have a current PvP gear vendor, why leave people out and why make them so hard to get now?

If you don’t like PvP gear then you don’t deserve to be running around in gear designed for PvP then flattened out and removed from the game and put in boxes to be sold to vendors

don’t know why you think you should have access to items if you don’t want to do the content to get them.

If I didn’t like raids should I be getting raid xmogs from PvP?

If you read my entire post (which you did not) and think this is about transmog gear, you have severe reading comprehension issues.

I suspect it was because there are people that did actively PvP that were getting annoyed with people like me using those quests to go buy all the old PvP mogs (except season 2 which I already had). There seems to be a definite trend to enabling people to look down their noses at other groups in WoW as late…

Except we did the content to get them. They were called PvP world quests. They were free for all or there were always people camping the towers to PvP.

How is that not PvP?

And how does an old outfit that no one cares about, because it’s old content, suddenly make you cooler?

You can get raid mogs by soloing old content, most of us were using the marks to buy old season gear. I don’t think current season mog should be available (and AFAIK it never has been).

then they never should have existed in the first place too

if it didn’t involve killing another player it wasn’t pvp

if it wasn’t pvp then you weren’t doing pvp

if you weren’t doing pvp you shouldnt be getting pvp rewards new or old

Because it gives them something they can feel superior about, even though they aren’t.

Through all of of Legion, I saw and thus PvPed probably 10 players at the towers. Otherwise, those PvP QWs were all PvE.

The issue is that almost all the crafting gear is not PvP related but requires marks to get higher levels of recipes. This basically blocks anyone who doesn’t PvP from progressing in their professions.

Didn’t they also use something you had to get from doing mythics as well?

and that changes things how? It was up to the opposite faction to defend the towers, if they chose not to it’s my fault.

Nope, that’s only the high level raid gear!

This expansion has a great opportunity to promote world PvP and warmode through these quests though. Legion didn’t really bring the desire to go defend a fort.

I agree with the OP here on the side of professions as well.

PvP content doesn’t have to be battlegrounds/Arenas exclusively and most times I find that winning a brawl is harder than winning a battleground because of the fewer number of players.

World content PvP for marks isn’t a terrible idea

It’s not a matter of fault. It’s a matter of PvP rewards for PvE.

sweet jesus if they’re going to make stuff that requires pvp currency then it’s a pvp item but it’s completely triggering that they’ve made a pvp set with out it being a pvp set because all the sets are the damn same and mean nothing

now im triggered at blizzard too

My point is that’s a garbage argument, if the towers required flagging and the opposite side didn’t defend it doesn’t mean it wasn’t PvP. It just means one side didn’t show up.

i did those quests all the time and I don’t think I ever saw anyone do any pvp on them ever

I doubt the quests even showed up on the opposite factions world quest list for the day

No crafting the item doesn’t require anything from PvP. Leveling the recipe does. It’s nothing to do with PvP it’s just a recipe… there are No corresponding PvE equivalents in professions right now.
