Marking Tanks

Why do some tanks get so offended when you mark then?

Last night I was leveling a new character by dungeoning and I got Blackfathom Deeps. The dungeon has been bugged for some time now and whoever gets taken by the tentacle gets teleported all over the place. I marked the tank because this was happening to them. They got so mad, they said “stop marking me stupid idiots” or something like that then they ragequit.

Can someone explain to me why marking would make someone this angry? It’s happened to me before that a tank gets upset. I just don’t get it. When I tank I don’t mind being marked

I think you found the only tank who cares. Sorry.

Just don’t Mark me as a square I’m no square. Im hip and where its at.

People have complained about this before. When I tank I’m a guardian, so I think I’m pretty visible. Seems unnecessary in a 5 man, but whatever.

People might mistake you for vermin though.

I use a balance of power neon appearance, so I don’t think so. And I can honestly say people don’t mirror or appearance swap with me in leveling dungeons, which was incredibly annoying.

I don’t get mad when it happens, but I don’t like it. I’m just oversensitive to visual “clutter” lol. I have a very minimalist UI because of that. I have a keybind to unmark myself, so I press that and we move on.

Okay THAT guy overreacted, but I don’t like being marked.
My guildmates had a running gag for a while about marking the tank constantly and I didn’t like the visual clutter. so now being constantly marked over and over makes me upset.

Same Here.
Can’t imagine someone ragequitting over it.

As DPS I always mark the tank, no issues in the many dungeons I’ve ran.

As a Tank I always mark the healer, they don’t complain

You just got a 5 years old kid

Honestly…it can really help the group to actually know where the tank is. Especially when there’s frontal crap going on. It can also be very beneficial for the healer, so they can either know where to aim their ground effect stuff and/or keep track of you easier on their raid frames.

Haven’t you heard the news?

More visual clutter, makes it harder to pick interrupts and other important visual signals.

That angry? No.

But I dislike being marked, because it gets in the way of my nameplates and bothers my vision.

I understand that. My main character, who exclusively tanks is a Vulpera. So I totally get why people feel the need to mark me.

Just say “yo I’m marking you so I can see you” and it’s all good.

Oh and my guild constantly changed the mark above my head, like 5-6 times a pull. I hate that.

But when they swap appearances with you and you can no longer control the giant glowing green hulk bear thing, and you’re like, what just happened…?

Looks like there should be a toggle in the interface panel so you won’t have to even see it.

Ya u right u right lol.

Marking DOES have its uses but in my experience its usually done by some person who just wants to appear that they know what they are doing when they don’t. I mean, its Warsong Gulch, everyone just runs out to a huge mid-field battle, why do I need a big orange above my head (healer), its not like someone is gonna be half dead and run toward me or something.

I don’t mind… but I can see how someone who maybe really cares about how cool they look and play for aesthetics might “get offended”. It would be neat if there was an opacity option for individual players.

So the tank could set there mark opacity to be invisible, and the default would be solid. So if someone WANTS to be able to easily spot the tank, they can, but the tank themselves don’t need to. Honestly ssurprised it already isn’t built in.

That would be nice. Then y’all can mark as you see fit.

But I seriously don’t understand how people have an issue following the tank. I’ve never had this problem as a DPS or as a healer. :woman_shrugging:

As DPS (or healer) I always focus on the tank, that’s better than a mark.

As a hunter, I’ve got a macro that misdirects to my focus, or my pet if there’s no focus.
