Map tooltips all garbled

Hello,

Since patch 8.3, all the tooltips (for example the world quest rewards) on the maps have garbled text.

Any solution?

Hey, Cowl! Have you tried resetting the user interface? Would you be able to provide a screenshot of the issue? Use an image sharing website like imgur and paste the URL between two ` (~ key) like so:

Hello,

Thanks for the tip. It turned out it was a very simple add-on, X&Y, that was out of date.

While I have your attention, is it possible to make the Mac OS 10.3.5 compatibility warning appear only once?

For reasons I can go into if you want, upgrading to 10.3.6 is just not a possibility for me. So for more than a year now, I’ve had to click on the 10.3.5 pop-up every time I launch Wow…

I’m curious what reason 10.13.6 is not an option. it’s a minor point update that probably fixed bugs in 10.13.5 and didn’t rework anything critical.

I’ll explain quickly. I bought a 560RX to keep playing wow on my 2009 MP. (I knew the more expensive 580RX would have had a better compatibility with current Mac OS, but I didn’t want to spend the extra cash because my plan was to buy a 2019 Mac Pro when it would come out. At the time I was convinced that the 2019 Mac Pro would have a reasonable price. Boy was I wrong!)

Besides my main monitor, I also drive a TV through HDMI.

I tested this set-up with 10.13.6 and it gave many strange errors with the TV and even corrupted many files from the Photos app, turning them into a solid block of red pixels.

After trying in vain to find solutions suggested to me on the Apple and Macrumors forums, I had to revert to my 10.13.5 back-up. That cleared up all the video and corrupted files issues.

Given that the 560RX would cause me grief with 10.15, I’m sticking with this set-up. Also, I’m hoping that the next gen iMacs will suit my needs as this computer is showing it’s age!

Two questions:

  1. Is your MP flashed with the 5,1 firmware? If not, you may wish to do so as it fixes some functionality with HDMI (including being able to get HDMI audio, which the 4,1 firmware cannot do).

  2. If so, do you have the APFS firmware update that allows you to use APFS? If not, it will cause problems (corrupted files, etc.). You need to do #1 in order to be able to do #2.

Note: If your TV is a 4k TV, you must unplug it in order to do any firmware updates due to a DisplayPort bug Apple refused to fix prior to the 2013 Mac Pro release. You can plug the TV back in after you have done both firmware updates.

Once you’ve got the 5,1 firmware installed (no CPU changes necessary), you can download the 10.13.6 Combo Updater linked below and it should hopefully either bring up a screen that lets you update the firmware so you can properly use APFS, or if it does not present you with that screen, should force two restarts on the update, one of which is to update the firmware to prep the machine for APFS. You’ll see an Apple logo and a progress bar alone on the bootup where the firmware is updated. Basically Apple is loading an EFI driver into the firmware for native APFS support.

Note: If you have a dual CPU machine, it is advised that you do not update to Mojave (10.14) due to an audio stutter bug introduced in that OS’ drivers on dual CPU machines.

I tried going to 10.13.6 a while back and I did all that. The firmware is updated to 5,1 and my OS SSD is APFS, right now.

Yet the 10.13.6 created havoc in Photos/iPhoto and I had to salvage a lot of corrupted images from a back-up.

I’m not trying that again.
