i dont get it. why does this tournament have 10x the viewers of AWC ???
there’s a dude that’s level 37 just running scarlet mon with 20k viewers. people like what they like i g
wait first place got 50k US real human dollars? who paid for this, that’s insaneeee
Because the truth is that no significant viewer audience has ever cared about 3v3. In the same way that few casuals have ever cared to play it, preferring lower barrier to entry formats like 2s or RSS.
Duels are more relatable and visually legible to the casual watcher. And this was more high stakes in terms of prize money and character death, to boot.
Otk they got a lot of $$
150k i believe
cata tournaments got 100k+ live viewers before twitch was even a thing
ok so then why is AWC viewership hardcapped at like 4k viewers? is it cause its the holidays?
hasn’t it been on the decline year after year? few people pvp, fewer people play arena, fewer still watch arena tournaments. fervor over arena tournaments died with arenajunkies.
streamer hype from big variety streamers
And it’s just fun.
It’s also just really nice to see people embracing a wild west pvp meta where they make due with what they have rather than screeching and begging and hoping for the next patch to make things balanced.
I don’t think 40k is that impressive of a number either. Some streamers get more than that picking their nose
Big reason is there’s no hype around awc lately. They don’t do anything cool to make people interested. It’s been the same exact thing every single year since they started it. They need to do something to spice things up or make some type of improvements.
While with this tournament all it is, is hype. Hardcore is super popular. They have a really big prizepool. They’ve got most of the big streamers playing in it.
At least when they had the finals at blizzcon they still had the hype factor to it. Right not it just feels like the same old tournament every season. Where it feels like there’s 0 stakes and nothing really matters. Till we get to the finals where it’s literally just the same exact tournament pretty much with a bigger prize pool.
It’s more than that. Asmon was averaging around 80k+ live viewers and peaked over 100k+ in the final duels.
They had over 300k+ viewers when you factor asmon, esfand, xaryu, top 10 streams at the time. I mean snutz had 20k+ viewers and he averages like 300-500.
Would’ve loved to see chanimal competing
There’s just nothing to hype. What’s interesting about watching the awc? Especially when balance is bad and you have the same meta slave teams. Blizzard just bad at making game.
At least with classic you have death = delete to make things interesting.
had 90k viewers on asmon’s stream
was actually the best wow event ive watched tbf
following brackets as well as watching pika cover it from player povs was nice
It’s not even about the state of the game, it’s about presentation. You can have the worst season ever but still run a good tournament. League does it all the time.
League is also specifically a PvP game. Less n less people are interested in WoW PvP because they can’t balance anything. Whether it’s RPM, outlaw rogues, rets, demo locks or any of the horribly balanced metas, these things tend to push people away from PvP.
I mean everyone knows balancing is horrible in this game 99% of the time. Luckily this game has a ton of hardcore fans who will overlook it, like a pink elephant in the room.
Balance isn’t the problem with wow and never has been. There is no such thing as a perfectly balanced game, and if there was it would be pretty boring. Do you think leagues balanced? Not a chance, there’s like 150 characters some are godlike some are bad, that’s just how live service games are. Most people aren’t quitting arena because of the meta. Most people don’t even know what a meta is. The most detrimental thing about wow is purely the new player experience. There’s no way for someone who just bought the game to just go in and play arena. And even if there was, there’s no way to teach players how to play the game at all. No tutorial, nothing.
Also honestly balancing hasn’t even been that bad this entire xpac “apart from ret patch”. Most specs in the game have a r1 viable comp. It wasn’t always like that. There were entire expansions where some specs were just completely useless.
Sure there’s always going to be the super S+ tier specs, but the floor is higher than it’s ever been. There aren’t any terrible specs anymore. That’s in it’s own a sort of balance.
But even with all of that, if blizzard put more effort into the production of awc. And reworked the whole system, they could make the entire thing much more entertaining. You want to force players to not play the same comps every single game? Introduce some sort of banning system where each team can ban 1 spec. If rogue is insanely S tier, teams can ban it, forcing teams who are reliant on it to have a backup. That would create a lot more comp diversity. What if we had player interviews after matches to make them more relatable and cause players other than the big streamers to gain fans? There are a million different things they could try if they wanted to, but have just sent out the same repetitive slop for years.
You said it’s hard to teach new players the game, which is true. There’s too many spells and the games mechanics are complicated. Having the game this complicated also makes the game hard to balance. You said every spec has a rank 1 viable comp, this only affects the top .05%. Only for the extraordinary good players are some off meta comps good. Still doesn’t chsnge the fact things like aug, ret/warrior, fist weaver make people not want to queue.
And I’ve watched a lot of the awc. There are so many mirror comps. The last time there was an ounce of hype was when F tier was beating everyone. It’s always the same players and the same comps. Also a lot of these guys are hard to market. Many of the awc players are really toxic and have serious outburst. In league you really don’t have that as much, so they’re more likable and marketable.
Last thing wow players are broke, skeptical and generally have disdain for blizzard and wow. Meaning, they won’t spend any money on anything wow related. Thus, less advertisers. And if there’s no advertisers, there’s no money to create hype for awc.
I don’t think there’s enough classes for this to work.
What I meant by this, is if they are viable at the tippy top. That means they are at least playable by everyone.
Every game has that aspect to it. You play league and maybe you just despise bruiser top laners and everytime you play against one it make you want to quit the game. Every game has incredibly hated aspects to it. And for the most part it’s usually not the sole factor in players quitting.
League has plenty of these people. It’s mainly that they have contracts with the league, or their teams where if they at unmarketable they are banned or kicked off the team. I’m pretty sure there was a super recent thing in league where a top lcs player was playing in korea, was being super toxic in solo q and was severely punished for it.
Not sure about this one bud. I know plenty of arena player who still buy store mounts, constantly boost characters, buy tons of wow tokens etc.
And if they make awc more entertaining and players more marketable. It gives advertisers more reasons to invest into it.
If each team could ban like 2 dps specs or 1 healer spec? There’s 32 specs in the game. If you had the max of 4 banned there’s still 28 to pick from. Even if you went for the extreme and let teams ban 1 class each there’d still be 11/13 available to people. Most teams have 4 players which means at a bare minimum only one can get their main banned out.
