Making prot spec pvp viable with 1 simple change

Make taunt work against enemy players. You are now forced to target this player for [taunt duration] seconds and cannot untarget them. Limit this to deep prot specs only or something.

Thank you for listening.

No one wants tanks in pvp.

Tank only work in PvP for doing objectives and essentially staying alive slightly longer while doing way less damage.

I would love for my Rogue Tank to be able to brawl in PvP though.

Magic classes eat me alive though sadly.

I agree tanks shouldn’t be a thing in PvP.

But I always thought it would be cool for taunt to have some functionality against Players. I think changing their target would be a bit much, but I think changing the direction of their facing would be pretty neat. Similar to Distract.
Mage about to hit your friend with a Frostbolt? Taunt and turn them around so it fails.

For warriors, Prot is already viable, what needs to be viable is Deep Prot, and any buffs need to not buff Fury/Prot. For deep prot to be viable, it needs to out put more dps, and a lot more threat. An option might be something like buffing revenge and shield slam, but any ability would need to actually be tied to having a deep prot spec, otherwise your simply boosting Fury/Prot.

It’s just datamined theorcrafting but there is the “Sword and Board” rune datamined for a later phase which gives Devastate and Revenge the chance to reset the CD of Shield Slam and make it cost 0 rage.

Depending on Shield Slam’s damage compared to Devastate this may or may not matter. If it’s good it’ll help. If it’s not even worth Shield Slamming over Devastate then it won’t make a difference.

You are overestimating how good this will be, just gives a prot something to actually do rather than running around shield and board and people just ignore you and kill your friends. Situational taunt at best.

Thats actually a good start, but I think it will need to go further, such as procing either overpower or revenge automatically after a shield slam, and increasing the threat on both, and maybe having shield slam be converted to a cone attack.

In SWTOR taunt would make it so that you would do half damage to anyone other than the tank who taunted you. I think something like that is better than outright forcing players to only attack the tank.

Responding as though this isn’t a troll post:

So just for clarity- would this work with Stoneclaw totem?

Stoneclaw Totem is not an actual taunt in Classic. It functions similar to Pre-SoD Growl where it “taunts” but all it does is generate a high amount of threat. It does not overtake the top threat, or cause a fixate effect like actual taunts do.

This is why if you are deep into fighting a mob and drop Stoneclaw it doesn’t force the mob to attack it immediately.

Why should a tank spec be made viable for pvp?

In the whole history of the game tanks have only been fun for the person playing it.

Nobody but tank players wants tanks in PVP.

Another person over estimating this thinking that tanks will rule the meta. Taunts last a few seconds against single targets, or a super long cooldown on an aoe taunt. At best useless prot warriors may be able to taunt some pets off healers in the back line or something.

I don’t think it will rule the meta I just hate tanks in PVP and I don’t want them to give tanks anything. Then next phase it will be well we can taunt but our x y z still bad please guys us a b c.

No one wants tanks.

and you can already taunt pets in PVP.

You can already taunt pets in PvP. Or at least you can in Wrath Classic.

Ah, so we’re just making sure that certain taunt effects work, but not others.

Gotcha.

Also for the OP’s question: No.

I didn’t design the abilities.

I play a Warlock, do you think I enjoy the fact that my Voidwalker “taunts” the target but does absolutely nothing because I have 10x the threat it does?

The point is, if a taunt was to work as OP suggested, it would have to have a fixate already. Stoneclaw, non-BM rune Hunter Growl, VW taunt, and probably a few others, don’t do that.

If the ability works on mobs and meant to be changed to work on players too, growl and Stoneclaw could also be changed to do that too… lol
