Although I have some decent toons on my Oceanic Normal server, the one thing I don’t have is any gold. I have rarely been able to collect more than about 7 gold and don’t have a toon past level 32. Whereas on my PvP server I have just over 40g and none of my toons there are over level 25.
It just seems so much easier to make gold on a pvp server because of the sorts of things that are in demand.
For example:
Horde Remulous (pve)- Oily Blackmouth fish current lowest price= 1s each.
Free Action Potions current lowest price =35s each.
Alliance Arugal (Pvp) - Oily Blackmouth fish current lowest price = 29s each.
Free Action Potions current lowest price = 1g 60s each.
So methods that I use to make gold on Arugal just don’t work on Remulous.
So the reason for my sad post is to ask for advice - how does someone with a couple of lower level alts on a Normal server make enough gold to get by, to pay for spells and training and so on? I mean, I have a toon over 30 and he will absolutely not have a mount at 40 due to having nearly zero gold.
Any suggestions or links to vids or whatever to help me out of this sad pecuniary situation would be appreciated.
Get as many bag slots as you can and make sure you keep all grays to vendor.
Most gold farming on PVE servers will be farming trash. Since you have no PVP worry on a PVE server, many materials are easy to come by, so the price is lower. I don’t know the prices of essences on PVE servers, but usually earth/air/water are around 15G and fire a bit less from molten core being on farm for 3 months. I bet they are much cheaper on a PVE server.
I wouldn’t worry about farming gold til later. Just quest and collect everything you can for the vendor. Don’t worry about buying all your spells, just buy the ones you need to get by. Those add up really quick. Since you are a caster, don’t waste gold on gear upgrades. Only get upgrades from random drops and dungeon loot.
At 60 you have some good solo farming options as a priest. I’ve been lasher farming in DM with my priest and my gross gold in about is a week is around 1.2K. I vendor all the greens that drop. You get living essences at a pretty good rate, as well as blues and epics. My net gold is probably in the 1K range, as I buy my drinks when I can’t get mage water, or I’m already close to DM and don’t want to make a trip to a major city to stock up.
Just play and don’t worry about mount money, it will come, 35+ the quest rewards start vendoring for a much higher price as well as the cash rewards you get from them.
Every server is different. A strategy based on “what pvp players need the most” won’t work on a pve server. So, find another strategy.
I play on 2 PVE servers. I am often surprised by the difference in AH prices. Some things aren’t worth crafting on one – they sell for less than the mats – while on the other they make a profit. Look for what is profitable on YOUR server.
You try crafting or farming stuff that doesn’t work. You try something else. You repeat what works. Checking AH prices (on your server) helps a lot.
There is no “standard way” we can tell you. There are a couple hundred different ways that people make profits in Classic. Each works – but only on some servers, and only for some classes and professions and levels.
The level of your toons is what is holding you back. Outside of a valuable boe drop, you’re just not quite at the level where trash loot/quests start to really add up.
The answer is that you’re looking at the wrong sources of income. On Normal servers, you don’t have to worry about getting ganked while fishing, so fish are only bought by people who are too lazy to do it themselves. Free Action Potions aren’t nearly as in demand on Normal servers because, again, no ganking.
For Alchemy, a low level Horde character can make decent coin off Strong Troll’s Blood Potion, since even casters need them for a quest in Hillsbrad. Other potions that are better in PvE work as well.
Also, a lot of endgame mats are are farmed in mid-level zones. Leatherworkers and Herbalists get the best of it, though the mining/engineering combo can work, too.
Tailors have a bit more difficulty, but bags are always a moneymaker, once you’re into Mageweave. And some decent leveling gear is crafted by tailors.
Enchanters… are best off just selling the mats they got from disenchanting. Enchanting isn’t a moneymaker until you get things like Crusader at endgame, and won’t be until Wrath, when Inscription made it viable.
If you’re on a pve server… don’t focus on fish for a pvp potion. Focus on fish that are needed for raiding food, or popular raiding potions and elixirs.
