Cross posting from professions as that forum seems to be dead:
Hi folks! I’m looking for some tips on making money. I don’t need a lot, just enough to cover my monthly sub and a bit of pocket change extra. So perhaps around 120-140k gold a month?
I would prefer to be able to do this by engaging in activities that I already like to do. I’ve listed (in order of preference) what I enjoy doing. Please do give me some suggestions.
Pvp - arena
Pvp - world pvp
World quests
Pvp - random bgs
M+ dungeons
Note: I do have access to the following professions: Engineering, Alchemy on my main. I have Tailoring, Enchanting, Inscription on alts but far behind in progression and patterns as they’re on alts.
I have occasionally tried to use alchemy but the cost of materials seems to be greater than the price of the final potion listed in AH. Even with multiple procs I don’t know if this was sustainable. I don’t like the idea of farming raw mats and don’t have large capital to be able to buy herbs in bulk to make it worthwhile.
For world quests I only do the ones that say kill 1 guy, get 200 gold. Or tortollan ones that award gold. Mindless but easy is farming pandaria and warlords raids on several difficulties. Search brutosaur calculator on google and it lists what each run yields in gold.
Well, unless they let you loot the bodies of your victims in pvp, there isn’t all that much to be made from it. Dunno if the zone chests give a reward, I don’t do WM often enough to tell.
World quests will give you some, especially if you have multiple toons and do the 2,000g ones that pop up every now and then on all your 120 alts.
M+…erm. No, not seeing anything for that.,
I suggest the following:
search Youtube for goldmaking videos. There are heaps of them, but just make sure you are checking out the newer ones. Even ones that are 6 months old can be out of date due to the things they suggest no longer selling well.
Download TradeSkillMaster and ‘master’ it to do things like AH sniping, undercutting, etc. If you have the time, patience and gold you can make a decent income but I never the patience for it.
Check out Undermine Journal and take a look at what things are selling well on your server/s and combine that with checking the items on TSM to see what their current region prices and percentage of daily sales is. Just because something has a large potential sale prices doesnt mean it will automatically sell, especially if it has a very low daily sale chance.
At this point in the expansion you have far less opportunity to make money if you already aren’t. Raw materials have pretty well bottomed out, the mog market is becoming saturated because people are doing raid and dungeon runs up to and including Legion, people are saving for their last chance at the bronto mount or to put towards S’lands.
Any idea how long a run takes? Figure if I can farm one while in queue for pvp that might make my time efficient.
Ty. Unfortunately I tried tsm and such in expansions before and I just cant stomach it. I did one expansion of selling glyphs and got burned out. Prob true bout what you said, ppl saving up and such.
In light of this any tips if I don’t want to do that kind of gold grind? Im still sitting on a gbank full of random stuff that UM journal purchases, but no one seems to be buying (mogs, pets, etc that I got cheap).
You can farm gold from the wod raids, all three in all difficulties (except lfr) will take something around 3h per character and you’ll make around 21k gold. If you do with 3 chars a week in 2 weeks will have your 120k.
Engineering has several pets, mounts and toys that you can sell. They can take a while to sell, but they tend to be reasonably profitable. You may have to farm some mats yourself. If you go this route, be sure to include stuff from older xpacs.
Alchemy also has a mount that you can sell. It’s a lot harder to get the recipe for the sandstone drake if you don’t have it though, and you may have to collect most or all of the mats yourself, since they’re really old.
Some of the emissary quests give 2k gold. You can do those on your alts as well.
The paragon chests have a good amount of gold on them too.
Personally, I rarely collect my own mats, except at the beginning of an xpac or when I can’t get enough off the AH. The amount of gold you get is pretty low for the time you spend on it.
Alchemy requires exploiting whatever mechanic gives you extra procs… And even then it looks like it has really low profit margins.
This is all great feedback, so thank you all. I’ll try address each of you. Thanks Bhell, for the raid suggestion. It sounds great, though I’m not sure i can do 3h at a stretch. Thing is I’m pretty casual as they come and my play time is extremely random. This is why I don’t have regular pvp partners or regular guild runs in anything. I’ll suddenly have to get up and leave if work or family calls. I’m guessing it will boot me out of instance after being away for a while.
To be honest I’m not completely opposed to it just because it keeps me in relevant/current content zones, which I prefer due to the potential wpvp fights. Do you recommend I farm raw mats and sell, or use my alchemy? I might try my hand at the dungeons while in queue for a bg. Hopefully the bg timer ticks away while I’m in the dungeon.
Thank you. Unfortunately I’m only at 1800 on my main in 2v2 so I’m probably not in any position to sell carries.
I don’t know if I can do M+ carries, but what you said is interesting. Maybe I can be a ‘tank for hire’ of sorts.
I have a few Sky Golems banked. I used to do the dailies for them but i can’t be arsed because I don’t log in some days. I snagged a few at 50k each last expansion but the price on my server was hovering around 50/55k so I thought it might sell better at the start of SL.
Good call on the gold emmisary & paragons.
Edit. If i have the herbs farmed myself am i better of selling alch pots or glyphs? Also are there recommended pots or is it mostly the flasks ?
If you have a geared character with a tank/demon hunter spec, especially with twilight devastation you might be able to sell freehold boosts if people still buy them. I did them back in april/may and made enough gold in two weeks to buy the 60 dollar version of shadow lands with gold. I didnt have twlight devistation but I had the aoe poison trinket from sethraliss.
i have 5 alts sitting in my garrison that i need about 10 minutes time for each one, once every couple days, which gives me my sub paid, i craft bags , lvl 91 gear, lvl 91rings and neck and the lvl 91 staffs, plus the mission board still gives things like the garrison resource cache that i sell for about 6 k each time, 2 or 3 hours of stress free crafting a week.
I don’t have a geared dh but i do have a tank that can prob do those. On that note, I have a question about getting gold cross realm because i considered selling vision runs a months ago.
Do I always have to make an alt on their server and run it over to meet them to get gold? If I do this aren’t I getting smaller amounts of gold spread across many realms that I can’t access?
Thanks for the tip. Maybe I should go back to garrisons. I only ever had my tailor there for the bags. What is it about 91 gear that sells btw? Also what is the garrison resource cache? Ty in advance!
Do the emissary quests. Even if they don’t offer gold, paragon chests drop about 4k.
Do the assaults. They drop 2k.
It helps to have an army of alts for this kind of gold grinding.
Late in an expansion, people tend to sit on their gold waiting for the next expansion to hit, so it gets harder working the AH and prices for things tend to drop.
