If you read here, the devs suggest they are open to something other than Cata after WOTLK. They say it will be based on player feedback. I don’t want to see Cata, at least not in the form it released, and I don’t want to see WOTLK simply be the end for classic minded WoW. Lets tell them we want Classic +. If you want to play Cata onwards you literally can just play retail.

“We’re trying to find that balancing point where we can preserve the Classic feeling and still make sure that we’re giving people new things to do,” he says. “Because obviously [if] you’re going to play through it again, you’re going to get to the end of it. And you’re going to say, ‘I want more.’ Well, what do we have? We’re going to try to make sure that we find something that is satisfying to people that gives them something more to do, and also feels as much like Classic originally. Whether or not that’s Cataclysm or something else in the future is something we have not decided today, and we definitely want to hear feedback from the community.”

Naahh, the new Classic content begins on the Classic Era realms in Phase 7. TBC/WOTLK are just progression servers. It really is a brilliant scheme from Bliz as this way they make the most money. First they bait the majority of the playerbase into crossing the Dark Portal all the while selling boosts, mounts, and cosmetics. Then after they’re burned out on expansion content, reveal the opening of two new raids in Classic Era: The Emerald Dream & Timbermaw Hold. Now everyone from the progression servers that wants to experience Classic+ will need to either start from scratch or pay the randso- I mean Cloning Fee. Bravo Blizzard, well played!

they screwed up classic som,classic tbc and now classic wrath with no lfd you think they are going to get classic + right?
We’ll never know until they try. I’ll take the slightly less pessimistic outlook and say the blunders they made/will make in som, tbcc, and wotlkc will provide some decent metrics for fine-tuning the eventual Classic+ content for Era. Honestly I wouldn’t have it any other way. I gotta hand it to Blizzard though. These elaborate alpha tests for Classic+ disguised as progression servers really surpassed all my expectations for such a small indie company. Who would have known they cared so much about delivering a quality product for us Classic fans!

Exactly. After WotLK, the choices are Cataclysm, Classic+, or nothing new. If I have little interest in the first or third (and I don’t), then I will choose Classic+, even if I think it’s likely that I will be disappointed by its design.
I will say that designing content for Classic+ should be easier than completely new content. They can ask themselves “Would this fit in the Vanilla world and mechanics?” Having said that, design is always difficult, and can always fall flat.
