As I was running through what seemed like a never ending number of delves on all my toons it occurred to me that I don’t loot regular mobs anymore. I pretty much only loot some rares and chests at the end of dungeons, but there is nothing worth looting from regular mobs since it’s only going to fill my bags with vendor trash that might give me a couple dozen gold. Maybe this is one reason why Blizzard seems to go to such effort to create so many unique vendor trash items, to not make it so noticeable that you just don’t get anything remotely of value from the vast majority of mobs in wow.
I anticipate the biggest reason for this design choice is to prevent bots from mass farming and disrupting the economy, but they could just make the items soulbound. They could add a lot of rare items to the loot tables like transmogs, mounts, and toys. They could make soulbound version of consumables like flasks, pots, and feasts. If they really wanted to they could even put BOE’s, gold, and tradeable items and make it bot-proof by requiring you to complete some time sensitive ‘puzzle’ or game before acquisition. It wouldn’t really be a puzzle, but a trivially easy task for a human that would be difficult for a bot, basically a disguised captcha. I’m sure they could think of ways to weave it into the story so it’s not immersion breaking.
I just think it’s an easy source of player dopamine hits for Blizzard and it would be nice to actually want to loot the mobs I kill. Looting mobs is such a core element of RPG’s and it has nearly disappeared from modern MMORPG’s.

Your title implies that looting, at one point, was great. The only system I truly loved was when they implemented mass/AoE looting. Truly, amazing.
We’re also inundated with tons of trash items, delve items and consumables, that adding more just seems over kill.

Get rid of all that useless crap and put stuff of value. Especially get rid of the actual vendor trash. It’s amazing to me how much literal vendor trash that blizzard designs.

More like hundreds to even thousands of gold, depending on luck and how much you fill your bags. You are missing out on a small fortune if you aren’t looting trash.

Hundreds to thousands? For a long time I looted everything and the most valuable thing you can get is like a ~100 gold BoE weapon that you can vendor…and you can’t even get that in delves. In the time it takes you to loot you could be making more money actively trying to get gold.
Now I know you don’t loot trash in delves but they do drop a lot of useful consumables.

It adds up though. Enter delve kill loot everything exit delve sell junk button enter new delve or same delve easy gold farm

Useful in endgame content? delves are so easy that delve consumables are all vendor trash to me.
Delves are endgame content.

yeah but nobody really finds them difficult. we are doing tier 11s in season 2 gear…
It adds up. I kill and loot everything. Red = dead. I also struggle with tier 8 on a 660 feral druid. Seems like there are a bunch of different types of players in this game, with different skill levels and interests.

I do think this season is even easier than S2 but Pocket Pizza giving me 10% move speed doesn’t care
It really is besides the point, but my contention is that for me (and i would bet a lot of people) looting isn’t worth it. That anyone could ever not want to loot indicates that the value of regular trash mob loot is extremely low. In most M0s I’ve done most of the people ignore all the trash loot.
It is literally a habit for me to shift-right click on everything. Gimme all the trash. It’s free money.

I see it as a money loss. With the time it takes to loot I could be making much more gold in other ways.
Do the opposite…take looting out of the game.
Killing a mob automatically loots to you. Vendor trash is just automatically converted to gold and gold added to your character.
It takes basically no time to loot. And it’s just incidental money you get while playing. Active farming is its own activity that you do instead of playing the game. It’s like a chore.

Why not make gold doing what you enjoy? Would you elaborate a little?
How much time do you spend looting?? It takes ~a second. Then you just get on your mammoth and vendor it all.

Those seconds add up, especially with how buggy “auto loot” is and you also have to vendor it. I bet if you compared a no loot run to a looted+vendor run you would be shocked at how much time you are wasting sitting there or traveling an extra 30 yards to go to a mob for sometimes silver.
