My warrior is a blacksmith, they don’t want to waste resources making mail. My monk is a leather worker, they don’t want to waste resources making mail. My hunter is a leather worker, they don’t want to waste resources making leather. Why can’t plate, mail, and leather be separated out the way cloth armor is?
Yes. I know this goes back to the old vanilla days when warriors started out wearing mail, hunters started out wearing leather, and there were no monks. But that was long ago and should have been changed.

I agree. Could call it “Chainsmithing” or something clever like that.

This is why the specializations exist, no?
I’m a mail wearer and haven’t put a point into the leather armor specialization so far, and not for the foreseeable future either.
From the gist of the discussion I believe they are talking about the earlier tiers. When you start out as a Blacksmith, the first twenty or so recipes you make are all Mail, which is historically valid but no longer appropriate.
Unfortunately in the list of “things that are messed up with crafting since all the changes and level squishes and ilvl boosts”, updating this is way down the priority list.
Actually something that’d be neat, I agree with Chainsmithing or something like that would be a fun title. Can still keep it needing skinning as mining and herb are neededby two professions as well. Can also be LW’s make bows while Chainsmiths make Crossbows.
I think the biggest porblem however is what else can be made? While we can add in and debate over that that’s probably the key reason why they don’t seperate them as it does make the pool for crafting more limited. Maybe in the next expansion they can do this or for 10.2/10.3
I would probably call it chaincrafting as for other things to make blizz could reintroduce weapon chains
