Magics and their counterparts

Arcane - Fel.
Holy - Shadow.

If death magic is domination, then what is life magic?

Domination is the suppression of one’s free will. Then life magics (whatever it may be called) must be the incitement of one’s fate? Sounds like a paradox

Thoughts?

Life magic seems tied to chaos. The Everbloom was as much of a threat as Old Gods were. Not sure if Disorder and Chaos are the same thing but it would be great to see Life as some chaotic force that needs the balance of Death.

Domination magic is only a type of Death Magic, not all of it. Every realm in the Shadowlands uses Death Magic.

Yeah Death Magic (Necromantic) includes:

  • Necromancy
  • Domination
  • Anima-uses-otherwise

Hope, most likely? I mean…they allways said this, hope as opposite of…Death? Hopemagic…sounds weird.

Devotion? But then that sounds too close to Light/Order… :man_shrugging:

I have no idea why they went with Domination instead of idk Atropic or something that is actually death related IRL when Domination as a word invokes ideas of forced control or forced order, or even in line with how in-game we already have Demonic Enslavement/Subjugation which is also “Domination”

Spes and Elpis are both words for hope in Greek

hiding under our nose if it turns out that the Titans ordered the Shadowlands and gave domination rune magic to the Primus after the Titans helped the EOs to overthrow Zovaal’s rule. :man_shrugging:

Which Titans? The ones of the Great Dark Beyond or the ones actually inside the Order Realm?

Incidentally the Chronicle doesn’t outright say which Titan woke up first just that legends(yes legends) state that Aman’Thul was first while not using it’s omniscient narrator position to actually confirm it.

The Primus is stated to have once sought out an unknown ally who could show him the infinite Timeways and allow him to observe the same battle over and over again to see how slight differences in strategy and troop deployment could change the outcome of a conflict. After eons of such study, the Primus could instantly assess any situation and devise the likeliest path to victory.

The Primus had an ally of Order(Time Magic is Order) which most certainly inspired the creation of Domination.

Incidentally Arcane apparently has an adverse reaction to the Void.

Wouldn’t surprise me if Domination’s Orderly inspiration caused it to gain it’s infamous adverse reaction to Light(even that Mawsworn Behemoth was killed by having Revendreth’s Light shown upon it) just as Arcane(which is actual Order Magic) has an adverse reaction to Void…

Jesse, what the hell are you talking about?

Despite this, Jaina and Umbric manage to work arcane and void magic together to create a portal bypassing all kinds of wards preventing entry by portals, and detecting portals, right into the Zandalari’s treasure chambers.

Throughout the lore, Light has repeatedly been shown as a kyrptonite factor to Death; holy spells doing extra damage to undead, resurrection capabilities, Light’s Hope chapel, Ashbringer shattering Frostmourne and being unharmed by the act, maybe Anduin tanking a spell from the Jailer himself…

But why would Domination’s Orderly inspiration make it averse to Light?

Because Light and Life are an intrusion to the Void and Silence which reigned before Creation. Domination is an aspect of Death which resists the intrusion of Life and desires a return to the Quiet of Stasis.

There’s even a parallel in comics. The Anti-Life Equation which is Darkseid’s Holy Grail in the DC Universe is a means of the absolute control of all living things everywhere.

Order being adverse to Void(though technically capable of being used alongside it to great effect if using the highest most complicated techniques) means attempting to reverse-engineer the Cosmic Force would give the imitation such a weakness as well even if to another Cosmic Force.

The weakness is apparently accounted for in the highest-grade Arcane and Void Magic Spells with only the Common Spells for both reacting badly.

The Common Runes for Arcane also shut down in reaction to Corruption Magic which as far as I am aware of were only seen used by the Gorian Empire’s Magic Breaker at the Titan Runestone of Nullification which of course means Corruption Magic is Order.

One of said Runes was drawn on the floor of Dalaran during the Dabbling in the Demonic Quest by the way(and had to be left unused due to it nullifying the Arcane Rune).

Since the Runestone is a Titan Artifact that means that Aggramar(the source of Draenor’s Titan Artifacts) figured out how to make a variant of Order that Arcane is weak to.

Aggramar in otherwords figured out how to make a form of Order(Corruption) that other forms were weak to while the Primus recklessly made a form of Death that emulated Order to the point of having a weakness only for the weakness to be to the opposite Cosmic Force basically.

All of your examples have dealt with runes specifically, and not magic performed, shall we say, by hand. Given the nature of runes and how they accumulate and release power, I think it’s logical they have limitations and different forces don’t play well together. That said, runes aren’t a construct of Order alone, but seem to be something any and all of the six cosmic powers can work with. Heck, Dwarven Paladins used to get consecrated runes.

I don’t think Order and Void are inherently incompatible. As I said before, we’ve examples of arcane magic and void magic being used in tandem successfully and to great effect.

But, so far, it’s canon that Light predates Void, not the other way around.

Quote Chronicles, Volume 1; " In the very beginning of time, before even the cosmos existed, there was only the Light and the Void. Originally, only the Light existed as an unfettered, shifting ocean of living energy. However, as some of its energies faded and dimmed, pockets of cold nothingness were created. From the absence of Light in these spaces, a new power coalesced and came to be. This was the Void, a dark and vampiric force driven to devour all energy, to twist creation inward to feed upon itself. The Void quickly grew and began to move against the Light, and before long, the mounting tension between the two forces ignited a series of explosions that ruptured the very fabric of creation, giving birth to the physical universe."

from the titan perspective, yes…right now…the game was reopened again and we don´t know which power was first.

But that doesn’t mean Void was first, so people can’t claim that’s canon either.

I never claimed that. The brokers even beliefe life and death were first
