Hi, Im tossing between a mage and shadowpriest for my next alt. Mainly PVE but also interested in PvP. What do people recomend?

mage - 2/3 dps specs are the lowest dps in the game, 2nd lowest healer, not great in pvp. - priest - one of the best healers, spriest is lower middle of the pack dps but makes up for it with insane vampiric embrace healing (that stuff literally rivals the actual healers in healing if you set up the groups right) their straight gods in pvp with lots of tools to get mana back, avoid death, and they can just dot and run for easy kills.

who cares, they’re all range dps. as long as one is good you still get to be the same role you picked the class for.
spriest is a better option in pvp is you’re bad at the game because its way easier to be good at than mage

PvP wise both are very good although mage has higher skill ceiling than priest therefore larger learning curve.

spriest is 3rd to last right above those 2 mage specs at least fire is middle of the pack
shadow priest damage in raids is terrible. they are on par with frost/arcane, same tier.
actually, checking logs for mages, frost mages is actually better than shadow priests.
n1 frost mages did 847dps vs n1 spriest 718dps
Priest, healers are in high demand and priest do it best.
Mage can heal as well, but if you enjoy doing group content, you will always be welcomed as a priest and thats for pvp or pve
Personally, I’d recommend looking at the whole class, not just a particular spec or role.
I suppose if that’s how you play, then it doesn’t matter and there isn’t anything to consider.
Mage would be quite interesting and fun for its solo farming potential, which is a much bigger part of the game than simply raid logging, but different people seem to play differently.
N1 frost mage is a fire mage not taking ignite so they disguise themself as frost. Actual Frost mage is way lower then what WCL shows lol.
Spriest aint even in the same realm of Frost/Arcane levels of trash lol.
Whatever you like playing. I will always play mage because I am a mage fan. If its crap or not. If all you care about is big numbers (in pve) though I wouldn’t choose either lol.

Tbh they both have their pros but the biggest question i would ask is how much do you like to play solo? If the answer is a lot then go mage. Priest solo is terrible. Mage is god tier. If your a person who raid logs then mage for dps and priest for healing. Pvp its honestly either or, priest is easier but, mage has a more options for outplaying your opponent. For gold making mage, priest will not make you any gold, unless there is a healer shortage and you sell your services, but even then mage would be better. As far as the “fun” factor of each, personally i find both classes to be fun, that being said, mage offers much more variety to game play. Priest dps offers almost zero variety besides switching between an aoe or single target build. Healing offers little choice as well. Where as mage has quite a few different options, although right now it seems there is only 1 option that extremely outperforms the others.
