Mage Shields?

Why do the shields have a 25 second recast timer on them? Seems like a massive nuisance to have to keep recasting it on myself.

Why not make them permanent until they are absorbed by damage or dispelled and then have the timer kick in?

25 sec is just the cooldown of the ability itself. The shields stay for a full minute. Which is still less than forever.
Maybe as some kind of ‘meaningful’ decision? “Do I refresh my shield now and risk not being able to refresh it sometime more important because of 25 sec CD? Or do I risk it expiring?”

Same logic applies though. It would be nice quality-of-life upgrade if the barrier just stayed up until it took enough damage to go down or was dispelled.

the 25 second CD on recasting it should stay though.

Because it can be broken before the 1 min duration ends. If that happens you can refresh it.

It should be undispellable lol. So shamans and SPriests cannot counter us so easily. That would be fun but op af.

Wouldn’t that be a nerf? Why would you want this? Imagine running around with a weakened shield that you can’t replace until it wears off, and once it wears off you have to go through an entire cooldown cycle where you’re vulnerable.

Nobody is saying it can’t be replaced. You can still recast it any time you want if the 25 second timer is up.

So if I’m running around with my permanent shield up taking no damage for 10+ minutes, I can cast it again anytime I want because the 25 second timer already reset. I’m not FORCED to recast it every minute just to have the shield up.

It’s the one thing I really hate about playing a mage… constantly casting that shield on myself because of the timer rather than taking damage. It’s especially annoying when I’m on a horse in PvP. More often than not I’ll have to hop off my horse just to recast that stupid shield.

Why recast it if you’re not anticipating any damage for the next minute though? >.>?

You are always anticipating damage in PvP from a stealth class so the shield almost always needs to be up. Which means it becomes a nuisance to need to keep recasting it because of an artificial timer. I understand the 25 second timer to use it again, but the shield should not disappear unless you take damage or it’s dispelled.

Probably isn’t allowed because of how massive it can be with Triune, imo. But I get where you’re coming from and wouldn’t mind that change ^.^ I just misunderstood at first

Yea, I guess a better way of describing it would have been, “Imagine having to recast arcane intellect every 1 minute whether it was dispelled or not.”

It would be a massive nuisance.

Same thing is happening with our shield. There is really no point having it just disappear after a minute whether we take damage or not. I just had an incident in PvP earlier where I decided not to jump off my mount to cast it and got ganked by a rogue. I probably would have died with the shield on because my mage is currently undergeared. But it’s still obnoxious having to jump off that mount and fall behind the team just to have the shield up.

I guess the same thing can be said about the priest shield. Just keep the damn thing up until damage is done or it’s dispelled.

Unfortunately, when you’re fighting priests and shamans, you have to cast arcane intellect pretty often, otherwise you do lose a lot of damage during burst windows.

The shield doesn’t get automatically refreshed because it would be a little bit of a nerf when it comes to PvP. I wouldn’t hate it if there was an automatic toggle that you could put on or off.

Fire mages in PvP really don’t want to refresh their shields every change they get, because they want to use those shields to protect their combustion.

And you also kind of want to time your shields so you’re able to get full value out of the conduit that gives you health when your shield gets attacked. If you refresh before losing health, you’re losing some value.

The shield economy is something skilled mages take in consideration when fighting.

There’s actually a fair amount of min/max around putting your shields up at the optimal time.

To set it up so that you get full benefit, with another instantly waiting to go, makes us a lot more tanky than refreshing it at the wrong time.

Right now it’s a semi-impactful decision, but yes it can be annoying until you’ve got that on auto-pilot.
