Mage question on scorch vs fireball during combustion when talented

Fire mage question gang

  1. I believe I am correct in saying that if you take the scorch talent that gives you guaranteed crit and increased damage below 30%, at below 30%, you switch to scorch as your filler instead of fireball. Please confirm I have this correct
  2. If you have combustion on though, and those talents, since combustion makes you get a guaranteed crit anyway, do you still switch to scorch below 30%, or do you stick with fireball during the combustion?

Thanks

You should cast scorch instead of fireball when the boss is under 30% hp, and during combustion no matter what health the boss is at, as you will get more pyroblasts using scorch than fireball.

Accurate.

Scorch cast time is much shorter than Fireball and scorch’s speed to target is way, way faster than fireball. In combustion you should be using scorch over fireball everytime.

It’s one of the reasons I can’t main fire: to maximize your combustion i THINK you’re supposed to be casting some Fireballs while you’re casting scorch (or vice versa). I could never get it down.

Maybe if I practiced more to the point where it’s muscle memory?

Nope. Combustion is all about Hot Streaks. You want to crank out as many instant Pyros as you can during Combustion. Ideally you should go into Combustion with three charges of Fire Blast and a Hot Streak already active. Alternate Pyroblast and Fire Blast until you run out of charges then switch to Scorch to squeeze out a few more instant Pyros while Combustion is up. The cast time and travel time of Fireball uses up too much of your precious Combustion window.

maybe you’re thinking of fire blast. I try to go back and forth between the two because of master blaster… I’m probably doing it wrong.

  1. Yes

  2. You should stick with scorch no matter what. One of the best Fire Mages named ‘Imfiredup’ In the guild vodkaz on Vol’jin US I am pretty sure, always uses scorch in his combustion rotation.

How he does it is once you run out of Fire Blasts, you’ll have one heating up proc, and a fire blast eventually coming off cooldown, but if you cast 2 straight scorches, and as the second one is ending you spam your pyro button, then once it goes off you stop casting anything.

In theory you can cast 2 straight instant pyroblasts, and then use that last fire blast to get one more hot streak pyro right before combustion ends, or as it ends depending on your haste.

I saw this in another thread and I was actually amazed. I’ve noticed my DPS has gone up a bit overall since I’ve started doing it.

Always scorch below 30% and with combustion on.

Fireball(until heating up)>cd’s>combust>fireblast>pyro>scortch>pyro>fireblast>pyro>scortch>pyro>scortch>pyro. i never use 3 fireblasts in my combustion because they are crucial to keeping up the successful hot streaks until you get another combustion, leaving the 3rd fireblast out doesnt affect how many critical pyros i cant get at my 16%haste currently. having a great combustion is awesome but if you have extra downtime or missed hot streaks afterwards because lack of fireblasts it can be a real bust. my 2 cents
p.s. only reason i use fireblast in combustion at all is for blaster master (hence the stagger) i get 2 stacks, 3rd stack would be late in the combustion and not hugely benefited from.

Don’t necro old threads.

What I do is when I get Heating Up!

I go for > Combust > Fire blast > Pyro > Fireblast > Pyro > Scorch > Scorch > Pyro > Pyro > Fireblast > Pyro > normal rotation.

I assume it depends on haste too though

Your name is Phuego; you can type in whichever fire thread you please.
