Mage Professions?

Classic is soon boys, and i’m wondering what professions to take based on my playstyle. I’m aware Tailoring + Enchanting is great for PvE, but I plan to dip my toes in both PvE raiding and PvP. Would tailoring + engineering be the optimal choice if I want to do both? Or is it just better if I stick with the default tailoring + enchanting build because realistically i’ll have to PvE more often at max level?

I’m planning to do an all around playstyle (like most players I imagine), because I want to PvP and PvE moderately.

Engineering + Herbalism. Engineering for PvP and Herbalism for PvE and PvP if you have an alchemist alt or buddy who can make pots for you.

Tailoring is only really great for PvE access to the Robe of the Archmage, which is BiS for raiding until T2.5. As well as the various resistance patterns you can make.

Robe of the Archmage + the bonuses on the ZG cloth set right? That covers suuuuuch a long period of PvE content in classic. Its like you sort of HAVE to take tailoring as a Mage/Warlock. If the ZG set bonus didnt require 300 tailoring to activate then it would be so much more freedom for cloth casters.

If I had a mage, it would be tailor/engi for life for this reason.

My plan is tailoring/mining for the Robe of the Archmage. Once I have it equipped, I’m swapping to engineering/mining. Then I’ll level engineering to 300 as a gnomish engineer and craft all of the BoPs. Then I’ll drop engineering and relearn it, but this time I’ll level engineering to 300 as a goblin engineer and stay there until the end of time. Then I’ll drop mining and take herbalism.

Oh crap I totally forgot that you had to be 300 tailoring for the bloodvine set. That said if OP was a dedicated raider I’d say go Tailoring. But if he’s just going to dabble, long term I think he’d get more bang for the buck going herbalism, unless he just wants to farm for gold some other way.

OP if you don’t mind a bunch of profession grinding, then this is actually the best route to go.

Only if you have a character with mining or have all the trinkets and etc you want.
Sometimes its very inconvenient to have engineering with mining if your not prepared.
As I was on my mage was mine eng, got rid of mine for guild then never progressed.

Engineering is a good mage profession, it is probably number 2 on best professions for mages.
But thats my opinion.
Repair bots will be useful for raids.

Or perhaps your rich with gold.

Tailor/Skinning till epic mount. Then can drop for whatever.

I’d argue Herb/Alch. Don’t underestimate the money you’ll save by being able to farm your own consumables.

Keep in mind how far away the content you’re picking a profession for will be. People talking about going tailoring for ZG sets are ignoring that ZG will probably come out summer 2020 and unless they’re using it in the mean time are just wasting a slot that could switch a week before the update.

I plan to at least complete every raid but progress moderately and not hardcore. That said it does sound like tailor + engineering seems pretty good. But it seems herbalism is useful all around? Same with alchemy?

I prefer herbalism over alchemy because as a mage you’re very efficient at it due to your ports. A full Black Lotus cycle of Silithus => Winterspring => Blasted Lands => Eastern Plaguelands takes about 45-50 minutes, so if you stop to pick some occasional dreamfoil and mountain silversage along the way you can hearth back to Silithus right when the Black Lotus respawns.

On the other hand if you don’t care about saving/making money with herbalism then just go Tailoring + Engineering.

As someone who mains a mage and warrior,

Tailoring/Engineering.

Tailoring for Robes of the Archamge and later the 3pc Bloodvine set bonus as you wont be replacing the BV set instantly in AQ.

You will replace bloodvine set with T2.5 Chest / Robes of volatile power, Leggings of Black Blizzard / Leggings of the Festering Swarm, and T2.5 Boots. At this point, you can drop tailoring and pick up herbalism for farming black lotus, herbs, or extra gold via herbs in DME farming.

For engineering, level it Gnomish first, craft the BoP stuff, relevel it for goblin and your set, this way you can have all your trinkets and craft goblin sapper charges as well.

Alternatively, you can keep tailoring and craft Mooncloth on CD as you will need like 25ish of em for Tier 3 but you would still be better off with herbalism and just buying the mooncloth.

You don’t need 300 tailor to wear the bloodvine set. You need 300 tailoring to get the extra 2% hit from the set bonus. It is a substantial dps increase but it’s not as big of a deal as missing out on the set entirely. Eventually tailoring becomes a dead prof but that will take quite a while.

Herb/Alch is probably the best to make money with. Engineering gives you access to a huge bag of tricks. Enchanting let’s you easily soup up your own gear and make money sitting around in org while chatting. It really all comes down to what you value personally. Nobody can make the decision for you.

Tailor + Anything
Your character. Your playstyle.
Your preference.

Ik i’m just looking for the most optimal choice to be useful and efficient for PvP and PvE. Trying to avoid being deadbeat or useless in a moderate raiding guild and battlegrounds simultaneously. It seems Tailor + Engineering might be the best option at the start of classic’s release due to all the competition for herbalism and the fact that enchanting is only useful at 60 primarily.

Dual Crafting professions can be very very useful. But gathering the materials may prove to be quite the pain in the lower back and wallet early in release without an alt to farm them for you
