Mage positioning in BGs

This week I have been doing BGs on my favorite mage spec ever, the frost mage. A challenge that I am running into is getting stunned/kicked/mongo trained by warriors or rogues. I realize that this is a positioning problem, are there any tips to improve this. I know you can play the 40 yard game but it’s hard to plan for a rogue blowing you up out of stealth.

One thing you want to understand is you always enter a fight you’re confident in winning. This is pretty much the general rule of any sort of combat. Do don’t initiate knowing you will lose.

Be ready to Frost Nova + Blink away, and try to Blink in the general direction of your team. The enemy will run toward you, so if you run towards your team you’re also running the enemy into your team.

As for Rogue countering, there are a couple things you can do. The classic Frost Nova --> Blink -->Polymorph. Also, do not forget about your pet’s Freeze (the pet ability that roots enemies in an area). This ability is incredibly strong as it allows you to halt enemies with a Frost Nova without even having to be near them! Remember the abilities that slow your enemies as well. The Frost Mage’s greatest strength is its ability to slow and root.

All of this may seem very elementary, but one needs to be consciously thinking of their escape route with these abilities. You need to be ready to nova blink at a moment’s notice, as you may quickly lose your advantage.

Positioning is also a matter of spatial awareness. Keep an eye on the flow of your teammates and the flow of your enemies. When you see the teams clash and you see your team getting blown up, you will notice a retreat. Don’t get left behind still fighting! A player that get’s caught alone on the battlefield generally dies first. This goes for the inverse as well. Push forward with your team if you see 1 or 2 kills on the initial clash.

If you have specific question, let me know :slight_smile:

Thanks for the detailed response. So say a rogue opens up on you, you go to nova - sheep - slow and he pops cloak and step kicks? Obviously you don’t have much time, Ice block until cloak expires and then slow and try to burst him down? I know rogues are vulnerable to slows and roots but they have a lot of counter play options.

Nova -> Blink
In that order, to root and distance yourself. You are at an advantage when you are out of melee range obviously. Be mindful of your Poly breaking. If you have a strong flurry/5x Ice Lance, that’s your Poly breaker. It’s been a little while since I’ve played Frost so you may have a stronger impact.

The unfortunate reality is that Rogues have tools to handle every class in the game pretty well. When cloak of shadows comes up, that’s his opportunity to strike as he has no worry for a counterattack. Activate Temporal Shield or Ice Block (I think you have 2 Ice Blocks?) in his Cloak window to regain your advantage once you’re able to attack again. This is an example of cooldown trading. At this point you should be able to Nova again. I don’t think Rogues can Shadowstep while rooted? Luckily, if you spec into Shimmer, you have 2 blinks and he only has 1 shadowstep.

Luckily, since you’re asking about BGs specifically, the responsibility put on you as an individual is significantly lower (as opposed to arenas)! If you feel weaker as a player or with a specific class, it’s okay to depend on your teammates while you learn your matchups.

Do NOT stack nova + blink. Nova then walk out of melee range. Save blink for when they try to gap close after the nova breaks. That will give you a LOT extra kiting.

We have two ice blocks, but temporal is an Arcane only thing now.

If you meet me, online, by Grub’s tavern, I will show you where the treasure is hidden.

Basically, this … ^^^
Be slippery as an eel and wise as a fox.
Good luck! :wink:

Addendum: Also, always keep an eye on your healz and make sure to peel.
