Mage or Warlock?

Im stuck between these two choices. I havnt played much WoW recently but when I do I like to PVP mostly but also would love to try raiding finally, thanks in adnvance for your input.

overall between the two I prefer playing as a mage.

mage

  • free food/water and semifree-portals
  • gold making ability from ports/water
  • everyone wants a mage friend
  • best aoe in the game
  • heavy mana dependancy. you’re going to learn to drink like a fish.

warlock

  • cheap(ish) mount (but not in phase 1 i think?)
  • summon stone (truthfully more of a utility to other people then to you.)
  • farming soul shards (no fun)
  • arguably THE top 1v1 class, at minimum a very high tier pvp class. if you have the skill.
  • high end leveling class. typically come in 2nd or 3rd in leveling races
  • less popular class. (aka more unique compared to mages)

Mage is all like… Boooooooooom

Warlock is all like… mwahahha

In raiding both of them just press one button

if you’re going to mainly pvp i would go warlock. Dotting up 4 players and just running away and having them fall at your heels can be very fun. please fear is probably the most annoying cc effect

i agree with a lot of what this person says except this one in particular. infact, i’d say mages prob the most popular of everything.

respectfully, I meant that warlocks are less popular then mages in general. whether that is a perk or a downside is dependent on the person playing that class. I’ll edit the post a bit to clean it up and make it a little more clear though.

Ah i misread it as mages being the least popular. disregard my old eyes

I prefer the mage playstyle, it’s just more of my thing, but warlocks are very unique and interesting in their playstyle.

When it comes to leveling, locks have it easy. Super easy. Like sit back and relax easy. You can pull multiple mobs: let your voidwalker taunt them while you DoT them and steal their souls for soul shards.

PVP is a blast. With sacrifice demon, you gain a heavy bubble to prevent you from getting instantly ganked. Not to mention the magelike burst potential of destruction locks.

For me, however, it’s about class fantasy. Demons and DoTs don’t appeal to me as much as a mage.

Mage.

Despite what some people may have told you. In general warlocks are not that good in classic. They exist for debuffs, and mostly summoning people. Your dps will not be close to top tier and in reality there isn’t much reason to bring you at all. Just stack warriors and mages.

IF you really like the class fantasy for warlock. You’ll still find groups, but you’ll be low priority on many peoples list.

With a Spriest putting up Shadow Weaving on a boss you’ll see some very, very high numbers coming from high-end locks. DS/Ruin or even SM/Ruin warlocks put out very comparable numbers to mages from T2 onward. Throw in the Healthstones, soulstones, curses, and summons and you’re going to see multiple warlocks in every raid.

I played sm/ruin I was able to compete with mages just fine. Add in a shadow priest and we locks even surpassed the mages. We just take a bit more gear to do it, because of the way blizzard itemized vanilla. Locks also scale really really well with gear.

To answer the OP question. Both Mages and Warlocks are a lot fun. Choose what fits you the best. Ultimately this is a game have fun first.

I’ll be playing both, mage for groups warlock for solo.

TBH both are very viable in every aspect of the game.

Both wanted in 5 mans, wanted in raids, wanted in group pvp, strong as solo queue, strong wpvp, both can farm really well too.

It’s all about class fantasy.

There will be less locks per raid group compared to mages for much of the game.
