Mage or Warlock?

Guys I have no idea who I want. Any suggestions?

Warlock. They are more fun.

Roll a warlock if you have no idea? Why, because succubus and you can actually wear black.

Warlock if horde, mage if alliance. Because, reasons.

I’ve struggled with this myself.

Mage pluses:

  • You can teleport. Huge in Classic to get around the world when quests send you all over.
  • You have 3 talent trees all of which are viable in one way or another at some point.
  • You’re strong early, you’re strong late, you’re strong in PvP.
  • You stomp on Warriors, which will probably be the most-played class in Classic.
  • Frankly it isn’t that hard to play in PvE.
  • Your PvP spec can also be your PvE spec (mostly) and vice versa. Respec costs are huge in Classic.
  • AOE farming if that’s your style.
  • Polymorph is the best overall CC in the game.
  • You can be a Troll. Trolls are awesome.
  • Your gearing is super straightforward.

Mage minuses:

  • You’ve gotta conjure food and drink for everybody. You’ve gotta buff AI. You may be asked to put up annoying buffs like amplify magic and dampen magic. Guildmates may bug you to teleport to them just so you can teleport them to someplace else. Warlocks are even worse, but Rogues for example just show up and do their own thing.
  • Probably a lot of people will be rolling Mages, almost certainly more than Warlocks. You’ll be in demand for 5-mans but maybe not so much for raids.
  • You’re personally squishy. You can only AOE farm because you can keep stuff off of you. You’re not great at soloing stuff that can’t be slowed.
  • Solo you have to stop and drink. If you like to go go go when solo mage may not be for you.
  • Being easy in PvE raiding also means being boring in PvE raiding.

Warlock pluses:

  • You’re tough. You can level/farm indefinitely by dotting, draining, lifetaping. You can solo all sorts of stuff because your pet can be a tank and you have multiple CC’s available.
  • You probably will be the least-played ranged DPS in Classic (not counting hybrids). There will be demand for you in raids although maybe not so much in 5-mans.
  • Maybe the most complex class in Classic. You have all sorts of little tricks to learn and perfect (e.g. using Curse of Recklessness to bounce a feared target back and forth). Class plays differently with every pet.
  • When fully geared and properly specced, you are maybe the ultimate god of solo PvP.

Warlock minuses:

  • A lot of the stuff that makes you in demand also makes your life a pain. Making Healthstones for everybody. Being expected to get places first to summon everybody else. Bags full of shards and farming shards.
  • Debuff limit means there may only be room for a few of you in any given raid. You may have to fight for your debuff spot with other players in your guild. Other people who don’t understand your class will constantly be telling you you’re doing something wrong.
  • You have several specs that are viable at various points or for various purposes, but your best PvP spec is definitely not a good PvE spec. Expect to spend more on respeccing than a Mage.
  • You have a lot of CC but none of it is as versatile or easy as Poly. Banish works on limited mob types. Seduce requires a pet. Fear can aggro other groups.
  • Your PvE DPS isn’t going to be as good as a Mage’s in most situations.
  • You can’t be a Troll. Why even live.

So here are my pros and cons:
Mage
Pros: King of AOE= King of Farming. Teleportation. Can Sells Mage food/portals
Burst damage makes it have funner gameplay. Can do more damage in dungeons
Cons: No mount, From what Ive experienced PVP is allot harder 1-33 is what ive played. Mana sucks have to eat after 2-3 pulls.
Warlock
Pros: Better PVP, Better Mana efficiency, Faster leveling,Pull more monsters at once, FREE mount
Cons: Boring gameplay only Dots and wanding, Damage sucks in groups. Managing pet.
What do you guys think?

Warlocks do more damage the longer something is alive. Time on target is very important. Nature of dots and all that.
Mages can nuke from the start which is more my play style.
Mages have much better mobility than warlocks.

Mage is more powerful, better qol and generally a perfect class with no weaknesses. Lock is fun if you like a challenge.

Porky no lows dose?

Flip a coin. Whichever you choose between Mage or Warlock, you can’t go wrong.

both are fun, try both to 25. you’ll know what you prefer.

they play different

Learn to say no. Also I typically require proof of health pots before I will give a healthstone. If they aren’t willing to go to the AH to grab some before raid then I’m not willing to farm shards for them. Tanks not withstanding.

Early on there will be spots for Corruption, however as long as you spec for DS/Ruin you don’t need Corruption to do great damage.

You can do okay in pvp with SM/Ruin since you will have SL and nightfall. Its not ideal but its not a killer.

Apples and Oranges, locks may not have poly but you can’t poly elementals. Plus there are many more tools in the warlock toolkit than mages have. Underwater breathing, Detect invisibility, curses that boost the damage of other and keeps mobs from running away when close to death.

In most situations a warlock will be on par when played correctly and late game the only mage that should be ahead of warlocks will be the one rolling ignite.

Not by race but CERTAINLY by actions, pop your infernal down in the bank or AH and banish it, just for the lulz. Get a group of 5 together and summon a doomguard in the Lakeshore inn and sit back and watch the chaos. You can definitely troll people.

Yeah I don’t disagree. If anything I’m leaning toward lock over mage personally. Probably change my mind 5 more times though.

Mage for ease of use, Warlock for outright fun and badassery as well as needing to know your class better than anyone else needs to know their class.

Mage is profitable. Warlock is very rewarding in other regards.

Warlocks can pull off some pretty crazy solos. The Eye of Shadow solo farming for example. Solo mara runs for 3 bosses up to 4-5 ish times an hour for some decent gph.

Warlock with the gear is the highest dps caster.
Their problem is threat, not dps.

I think you got it wrong.

Mage is probably the best PVP class in the game.
Has better efficiency.
Can pull more mobs than a Warlock, and if you get ahead of the pack or are leveling where u dont have mob competition Mage will level faster.

The reason I usually take mage over warlock is because I don’t want to manage a pet.

It’s also why I never played ice once water elemental came about.

If you’ve already picked your faction, but not class, I would suggest warlock for alliance, and mage for horde.
-Warlock has pets to easily smash shaman totems. Shamans also can’t dispel your dots like paladins can. Furthermore, you really need blessing of salvation in raids, something horde does not have. Tranquil totem is never used unless the raid has a surplus of excess shamans.
-Mages struggle to deal with shaman totems, so not fighting them is nice. Paladins are far less dangerous for mages. You can blink off hammer of justice and lock their 1 spell tree for 10s with counterspell. In raids, mages do not need blessing of salvation.

I will be leveling one of each.
