Mage or Warlock?

Hey Everybody, can’t contain my excitement for wow classic so I decided to make a post.

Warlock or Mage? Warlock was the very first class I ever played. I loved playing affliction, doing the pet quests, and getting the FelSteed mount was so sick. Then there’s mage which has always been my class fantasy. I’d be a fire mage if I somehow warped into wow lol

Tough decision, but wondering what you all think I should choose and why. Maybe tell me why you enjoyed them so much. I’ll be doing both PVP and PVE

What would you rather be, a vending machine or an uber driver?

I think you just answered yourself

Mages are stronger in PvE due to a more generous threat cap
Warlocks are the strongest class in PvP having no real counters, although they’re a bit less mobile and if that’s something you like in your class, you still might prefer mage.

Why not both?

fire mage not usable in mc. have to go frost. boss in aq40 - viscidus (edited to correct name), only killable with frost spells, frost aoe build for multiple targets for grinding xp or farming cloth/disenchants, in short, frost mage is quite useful in vanilla.

p.s. anyone know if sapphiron was immune to frost? if so, fire or arcane for naxx.

edited for historical errors

What? Why would you go frost for Ouro? He isn’t immune to fire and you don’t need to be frost to kill the adds either.

You should be Frost for MC/BWL and Fire for AQ40/Naxx. It does more damage and is a lot more interactive because of the rolling ignites.

The only “arcane” spec is a frost mage that’s grabbing Arcane Power. There’s no actual arcane spec in vanilla.

oh it wasnt ouro, it was that giant slime. forget his name.

edit: viscidus

While no strategy is needed anymore, he is still only susceptible to frost damage. Thus he is unable to be killed without someone in the group able to do frost damage.

This NPC can be found in [Temple of Ahn’Qiraj]

I mean…a mage speced into fire can still cast frost spells…

true, i thought of that and also thought of how specializing frost probably makes it easier. i havent looked at the talent trees for vanilla mage yet nor recall how it worked beyond basic stuff. did you have shatters? could you freeze him solid and shatter? did ya get cone of cold if you didn’t talent it? blizzard? dont recall all those details. i never ran it in vanilla. first time in there was probably tbc or even wrath

Just make one of each for soloing I would say Warlock because later on you get the void walker. People also love lock candy in raids so everyone will be your best friend.

Doesn’t at all change the context of your post, but you get the voidwalker quest at level 10 which is like 3 hours into the game even for slow people… Beyond that, you get the Imp at level 2, which is honestly a “good enough” tank below level 10 when single targeting mobs, or can be split between you and the imp (if you can manage threat well) to constantly have double pulls.

TL:DR the leveling advantage of being a warlock and having pet-tanking potential is basically always there. =)

Oh yeah Viscidus, the catch is that you don’t need to be frost for him since all that matters is the number of frost hits. Warlocks just use the frost damage wand from AV while mages either do the same or spam rank 1 frost bolt.

Being frost for faster frostbolts (1s instead of 1.5s) wouldn’t help either because the global cooldown/GCD in vanilla is 1.5s, which means you’d be wasting time between casts if you have Improved Frostbolt anyways.

You definitely don’t need to be frost for him since it’s the only boss in the game that relies on getting hit a certain number of times rather than taking a certain amount of damage. In fact, you’re much better off going fire since you can use Blast Wave to kill the adds on top of sapper charges.

oh cool. good info. i assumed the more frost spells you used the better. like frost bolt, cone of cold, blizzard, frost nova. i have only ever killed him with hunter frost trap and then only if i was farming brood rep, cause dang that takes a long time with frost trap

Mage you’ll be drinking a lot while leveling. Warlock can have almost zero downtime.

Mage has better dps pretty much the entire game. Warlock has threat issues that limit their dps.

Mages are expected to make water for the raid and ports after it. Warlocks are expected to farm enough shards to summon the raid and make health stones for everyone.

Both are desired in raids but warlock will probably have an easier time finding a raid spot due to there being less of them, if that sort of thing matters to you. (This won’t necessarily be true for you, depends entirely on what is actually played more on your server which could be different.)

Mage is one of the best farming classes in game. Warlock is decent just not as good as a mage at this.

Both classes are very strong in pvp but warlock has the edge here.

Hope some of that helps.
