Mage or Rogue 1.12

definitely rogues for wpvp, though mages are good in their own right

they are both good for bgs too. mages are probably more consistent, but rogues have the potential to make game winning plays in all three bgs

Thats the only way to play Rogue though

No seriously, thats my plan…

im stuck between the two as well… if I were to go mage, I would roll Fire just for the scorch procs and POM pyro blast…insta death.

Being an OG rogue since vanilla, I always loved the sneaking in org and killing people ontop of the bank or AH. farming was ez with rogues and mages, mages are a bit better but! the stealth is what makes me lean more towards a rogue… sheep and 1v2 situations are easy for a mage.

You guys are going to be disappointed with rogues in 1.12

played since 1.3 and always made what they gave me work.

To even have a chance against a skilled mage A rogue has to be specced into prep and be hemo or ambush/bs prep.

The only classes that stands a chance against a skilled mage = warlock.
In general every class can beat every other class if you’re skilled enough or outgear them enough.

It all comes down to how u want to play.

What? Hunters obliterate mages what are you on about???

Did you just say rogue is a hard counter to mage? If you lose to a rogue as a mage you’re bad, and should feel bad.

I tried rogue for PvP. Was a little boring at 60. Impossible to get behind your opponent to backstab. And if you go hemo swords you barely do any damage. Plus a lot of the PvP builds don’t even have 5/5 camouflage, so people can see you from half way across the map. And mages don’t have stealth. I like to be able to see what everyone is doing out in the world, without them being able to see me. So I can see who is attacking who.

I’ll be going feral druid on live. So excited, can’t wait.

My recollection of PVP in Vanilla mostly involves high-end pvp with organized teams of fully-geared high-ranked players going at it.

There was this one Naxx-geared High Warlord rogue who was an absolute monster. He could kill my naxx-geared Field Marshal mage in less than 2 seconds. And he could pretty much kill anyone in 1v1.

A skilled rogue pretty much hard-countered a mage. Mages didn’t have a lot of tools to deal with them and their damage output was insane. Rogues had more stuns than we had counters.

I recall rogues having more trouble against classes in heavy armor as they could withstand the incoming damage and didn’t just fall over like squishy mages.

Let me guess, you weren’t deep in frost…? Frost mages beat rogues and warriors most of the time. RNG comes in to play sometimes, but you should 3-4 shot a rogue.

I played pretty much all the specs in PVP in Vanilla. 3-minute mage fire, 3-minute mage frost, deep frost, deep fire, elementalist.

Against a skilled and geared rogue I won maybe 1 in 10 fights in 1v1 regardless of spec when I had comparable gear.

The only counters mages had were blink, iceblock on a 5-minute cooldown (only if frost and with such a long cooldown it usually wasn’t up anyways), and pvp trinket. That wasn’t enough against a skilled and geared rogue.

I recall one piece of pvp advice at the time was “don’t counter the initial stun”. if you did they would get you with a longer stun. You were supposed to save your counter for later. Unfortunately, that advice didn’t work against a geared rogue since the initial 2-second stun was enough time for them to get me to 25% health. And when that low, the combat was basically over.

This is cookadooks. Mages hated hunters and linked locks. Rogues werent easy but we had counters even when the rogue got the jump. Also mages are great solo.

Hmm. It’s not 2 second stun, it’s 4. And that’s bad advice. It depends which spec you’re fighting. Rogue play style varies greatly depending on their spec. Combat will have imp sprint. Sub has prep. SF dagger build has high initial burst. It’s all about a quick counter and taking control of the fight against a rogue. Rank 1 bliz to remove their vanish, etc. Watch some frost mage vids and you’ll see. And not the scrub ones where they show huge crits with lens flares. Or ganging gold farmers in tyrs hand.

One thing I recall from Vanilla is 9/10 times the rogue would get the jump on the mage. Even if the mage was trying to scan for a rogue using Rank 1 Blizzard or Arcane Explosion, rogues didn’t usually have any trouble getting the jump.

Basically, if you’re a mage fighting a rogue, always assume the fight starts when the rogue gets the jump on you.

Sometimes PVP in Vanilla would get rather comical. Like when the other team sees you have frost mages and they put on their cold resist gear. OUCH!

Warriors are probably the easiest target for mages in Vanilla… but not when the warrior is wearing a ton of easily obtained crafted frost resist gear. The fight goes south fast for the mage when the warrior is virtually immune to all the mage’s chills and roots.

On average, Rogue v Mage could come down to who had more cds available… In a full CD duel, the mage will have 1 more cd than the rogue does, and SHOULD win every matchup.

That being said, a major mistake on either’s part could spell death.

As far as what to play between the two? I mean they have radically different playstyles… Power wise mages are better in nearly every aspect of the game… Rogues will put out more single target damage in a raid, but mages actually have AoE while being much more desirable as a ranged dps… Mages are significantly better in all forms of pvp, save world pvp ganking. Mages are also massively better at farming, and get some pretty damn nice QoL with teleports/portals/free food…

I’d recommend trying both out and seeing what you enjoy more, because playstyle really does make a massive difference here… Personally I find mages obnoxiously boring in vanilla, and loved my rogue back then, even if dagger builds where less optimal than combat-swords, and had some moderately annoying QoL drawbacks when soloing (since it limits backstab usage)

Mages and Hunters hard counter the absolute crap out of Warriors. Could be the best Warrior in the world, if either of those classes are being played by a competent kiter then you have no chance.

If we consider equal skill and gear, then almost anyone can 1v1 a Warrior.

Edit: Tried to get both peeps in quotations and somehow it has me quoting Sabetha in the chat box, but is tagging Sherbertt.

Maybe noob mages. Skilled frost mages play with hunters like they are a toy.

You’d be surprised at how much of organized team pvp resembles real world ganking.

For example: You’re in Arathi Basin and have a node with little defense. Ideally you have at least 2 defenders per flag, but sometimes that doesn’t happen. Suppose you’re lone defender at the flag… would you rather be a rogue or a mage?

If you’re a mage on defense, you’re going to get ganked by a rogue, probably die, and the rogue will cap the flag.

If you’re a mage on offense, they’ll see you coming a mile away and call for help. You probably won’t have enough time to disable the defender and cap before reinforcements arrive.

If you’re a rogue on defense you stay stealthed and then get the jump on whoever shows up to cap the “undefended” flag.

If you’re a rogue on offense, you ambush the lone defender and get the kill. And because they don’t see you coming they aren’t able to call for reinforcement until it is too late.

Even better is 2 rogues working as a team on offense or defense. That way they cant’ see you coming and you have the firepower to deal with almost anything.

The same definitely isn’t true of a team of 2 mages. The other side sees you a mile away and sends appropriate reinforcement to counter you.
