Mage main?

Wanted a caster pure dps class. Mage worth rolling? gimme all the feedback.
gonna be raiding, mythic+, and pvping this upcoming xpac.

It’s very fun. Very strong. Mage favoritism isn’t just a meme. They WILL be good and WILL be sought after. I’d argue they’re going to be one of if not the most sought after caster, behind maybe Aug.

Frost and Fire haven’t changed much, if you’ve played this expansion they are very similar. Arcane has quite a few changes I haven’t tested much. If they really do these new affixes, mages will benefit two different weeks if you’re willing change specs.

Hero Talents don’t change gameplay much/at all. Really, they’re just passives, maybe a few things to track. If you wanted new shiny toys well there aren’t any, but the magic is in the class and specs themselves, and they are really fun regardless. I definitely recommend, a big winner of this expansion.

Mage is a class that is powerful with fun utility. We have three flavors, and they all have a different feel. I enjoy Frost the most but also like Arcane. Fire is not my thing.

longevity you think they’re a decent pick? since 3 dps specs 2 are bound to be good in pvp/pve ya?

In PvP, since playing since WotLk, I really can’t think a substantial period of time that mage wasn’t S tier in PvP. It’s just a guaranteed.

PvE, Mage has been a regular staple in most/all god comps for M+ since the inception of it. You’ll be a desired pick in pugs. In Raid, their damage tends to be mid/upper average with the stereotype being; Arcane is theoretically the best but hardest to play optimally but Fire and Frost aren’t far enough behind, so it’s a truly play what you like the most. In Raid you will also be sought after for Arcane Intellect buff, and potentially as a Lust slot too, along with free food and ports, so you’ll be welcomed to basically any group if they don’t already have a mage.

I’ve played things like hunter and warlock too and mage is way, way more balanced than them. In my experience, all three mage specs are really close. While some perform better in some scenarios the differences are not great enough that you can’t do amazing on the spec you love the most, and that’s what I love most about mage. There’s no Affliction/Survival treatment within mage.

What about hunter was bothering you? I’m considering swapping the opposite way.

I dunno, the recent rankings seem to show about 2 specs being able to perform around the top of the class’s max at any given time. Some seasons in DF frost has just outright dominated. I’m glad frost got some love though. It used to be our worst spec. Before then, usually arcane and fire dominated (usually fire). Frost was the low-risk low-reward spec, easier to play, but generally not the best.

I could have sworn there was a patch here or there were at least one of our specs was at the botto since I came back in legion. Dragonflight treatment has been overall better than the historical norm, but I wouldn’t claim mage has had an easy time. Also alot of our balancing has focused solely on group content with solo play often being an afterthought. And sometimes our best builds have required very specific gear to work properly (mechagon bracers in BFA being a great example for fire.).

I’m impressed the usual suspects who don’t do any serious content haven’t come here to post about how Mage is terrible.
