Mage does mid dps. All 3 specs are playable. None are meta or fotm. They are just serviceable. If you don’t like peaks and valleys you may want to consider frost. It has a flat damage profile and isn’t as punished for movement heavy fights. I do agree that mage is overly complicated compared to a lot of other specs. I could see that not being so fun for people who are unfamiliar with modern mage.
Frost performs extremely well on Kurog and Senarth and generally above the old meta Mage spec, Arcane, in M+ by now. (Granted, Fire also overtakes Arcane now. Large buffs to all but Arcane will do that.)
Yes, Mage as a whole badly underperforms on three fights this tier, but given who else underperforms in those fights, that’s not terribly unexpected and simply points out issues of fit (or, none to even fight design) over issues of tuning.
Hey that’s not true. There’s that one guy we all have on ignore, and that other guy who plays a low-level classic Hunter. They both love RoP so much they married it and went on a polygamous honeymoon with it.
It’s not an arcade game so no.
Ugh… what?
Can’t disagree either. I started playing this game in Wrath on my mage and our team needing a lock was enough incentive to just admit defeat and park her. Playing my lock is much more fun and even questing doesn’t take it out of me the way my mage does when I quest on her. I have to be so careful on my mage, even with non elites and God forbid I try to solo some of the rares out there. I usually wait for someone else to come along to even try. Makes me so sad at the state of mages these days.
Hmm sorry , not sure why my post showed this toon. I never play her.
I’ve been playing a fire mage since vanilla. I have 365 days played on my mage. I worked for weeks to get my gear up this xpac, and have hit 393. I go into normal vault, and I am constantly being beaten. I try different specs, I enchanted my gear, gems, use consumables, and at best, make middle of the pack.
This is the first time that I have actually thought about using another character to main because of how hard it is to keep up the dps, and how disappointing it is with all the effort I put in, just to at best get middle of the pack, and not even be close to other classes that are just facerolling the game.
Fire mage used to be fun. used to be competitive with the right amount of gear. Now, it’s just a shadow of it’s former glory and not fun to play in the slightest.
you are right. im playing with my alts and they are way more fun.
It feels like Mage is hard to play for the sake of being hard to play.
I like that is has some high skill abilities you can do unique stuff with like Alter Time. That’s great. But the core rotations also being tricky/unforgiving, and staying alive, and moving, and you can’t do elites, and you need to predict all damage in advance, and and and…
It’s not impossibly hard or anything, but if you switch over to another class… I mean you can almost fall asleep playing some specs. It’s very odd.
That’s certainly true in practice but to be fair to Blizzard I don’t think they actively set out to make it that way. Unfortunately, there continues to be a great deal of incompetence with whoever is designing the talent trees and a desire to double down on bad ideas from the previous two expansions that make the class perform very poorly unless played a certain way.
Players are creative and have found ways to do decent damage with the terrible tools we’ve been given but the results are very gimmicky builds that most players just can’t cope with. So while the initial culprit is certainly Blizzard with their flawed designs at least part of that added complexity you’re talking about comes from the players themselves albeit only because they’re trying to make a broken class work.
It’s not difficult to look at how the talent trees were designed and see the very basic and often very poorly performing builds the devs intended for us to use but of course no one uses them because they just don’t bring the numbers. You can also see this highlighted by the head scratch inducing tuning they do to abilities and talents no one uses because that’s what they wanted us to use all along. It’s like two ships passing in the night. That’s what happens when there is zero communication from a developer or a genuine desire to heed feedback.
Personally, I haven’t been playing the game in weeks now and frankly I don’t have a good reason why I haven’t canceled my subscription yet (probably because the $15 aren’t really a factor for me) but that’s sure to happen too sooner or later like it did in SL.
I say something similar about arcane all the time. In no world do you give the current arcane kit to someone with no previous knowledge of the spec and they come even remotely close to what the current way to play is.
Now its probably hyperbole to compare it to something like BM hunter, but you can take something like BM hunter and at a glance its, your pets do damage, kill command makes your pets do a lot of damage, beasital wrath makes my pets do more damage so I should try to cast as many kill commands in my BW windows. Thats the core of the spec right there thats it, you can go further and talk about frenzy stacks and barbed shot cdr, but that all funnels into cast kill command in wrath.
You compare that to arcane where you have a builder spender philosophy with arcane charges and arcane barrage, so I think I want to spend charges in my touch windows? Nope you actually rarely cast barrage (in ST) in your touch windows, mostly just on that 4th spark charge where you que during the travel time. And then there’s spark, spark makes my spells hit harder, from a laymans pov why wouldnt I want to cast that in my touch window? Why wouldnt I want to cast arcane surge in my touch window, my big spec CD?
Arcane is a spec with a dozen abilities thrown at it, and a robot tried dozens of different iterations until it found the one that did the most damage. Nothing about it is intuitive and in my opinion is a terribly designed spec
I personally find all 3 mage specs to be boring and clunky.
I wanted to delete my mage that ive had since 2004 when playing frost in keys…
This is more of a thing with missing the initial wave pf season start and clique mentality with the community. If you didn’t start grinding score and gear day 1 of season start and aren’t 2800-3100 io by now don’t expect quick invites.
All people ever look at is score and runs done. If you are low score with 10 15+'s done then you’ll always get declined as an example.
If you want more acceptance no matter the spec or class on keys then complete as many keys as you can at your level bracket on io. I got this way on my dk i made a month after season started. It takes forever to get into 18-20’s but im getting it done.
If they see you at 1800 io but you have a ton of 5-9’s showing completion like say 100 runs then getting accepted into 12-15’s will be easier and easier.
Class and spec always come 2nd over score/runs timed.
All those words and yet youre still wrong. People will straight up decline a class that isnt meta off the bat. But hey youre a DK you never have to worry about that
Im declined from almost all 20’s i apply to and the 20’s i create have people who leave after joining.
Im unholy so it’s not due to spec but once they see my score and only 2 20’s timed they dip.
Im not even a full dk main. My “real” main being prot paly for 9 years.
But sure ignore everything i said just because im commenting on a dk char.
People will always opt for accepting a person with more timed clears than a flavor spec/class and have far more success in a key.
For myself i just need a ton more 15’s cleared on sheet to get accepted in more 20’s or boost io with friends. Those are my only options on my dk since i missed the initial wave of day 1 on this char.
Pugs brick my 21’s i built all day but yes im doing my own keys from time to time. Reading mage forum since i made a frost mage because frost dk will still be under frost mage in 10.0.7 and i want a frosty aesthetic.
Oh an unholy DK and a protection paladin? Yeah you really dont know the meaning of meta rejection but ok.
Its the same problem then with the labor market, you need experience to get a job but need a job to get experience.
Weren’t you the one initially having issues since my first reply to you? Or have you magically jumped past KSH on the mage?
Haven’t felt this useless as a mage since they added permanent portals to Stormwind XD
