I like the theme and idea of the Night Fae one and I don’t mind channeling but I don’t get why you can’t move while channeling. We’re already forced into melee range so I don’t see why it would be too much to just be able to move while channeling. Especially since all 3 specs are ranged DPS, it’s not like other classes where something like that may benefit one spec over another.
Kyrian has an edge because in Palegos tree the top and bottom abilities give mastery and vers. The ability itself is meh since it increases damage over time for each ability you use. Maldraxxus and Night Fae abilities are rather good but problem with Skeleton is that its a 3 min cd and Night Fae is a decent aoe and reduces cds.
So obviously things have changed some since this initial post.
But I still don’t know which covenant would be best over all.
I’m definitely going back Frost for the start of the expansion, and I kinda want to go Venthyr for the transmog alone…
And honestly I haven’t been keeping up with the ability changes all to much.
Is Mirrors of torment still completely useless in PVE?
Radiant spark is pretty great
No its not useless. Its not bone spike but we aren’t getting anything that big apparently. In Torghast it gets buffed a lot as well making it quite significant. I use it all the time and I prefer it to spark as it doesn’t get chewed.
Thanks for the info.
Makes my decision that much easier I suppose.
That’s not necessarily a good thing.
The devs working on Shadowlands are no doubt as clueless as they were when they made BFA. I expect the the typical player experience will be the following:
- One covenant will clearly be the “best” covenant for your class.
- You will take the “best” covenant. You wouldn’t get accepted into a raiding/dungeon group if you didn’t.
- 2 weeks later Blizzard will nerf that covenant by 80%. Now it’s the worst covenant for your class by a mile!
- Next you have to spend weeks grinding so you can change covenants to the new best covenant for your class.
- A month later, Blizzard nerfs the new best covenant. Now it is the worst covenant.
- Time to switch covenants again.
… and so on until …
- You tear your hair out or throw your monitor through a window in frustration. It feels less like you are playing the game and more like the game is playing you.
Meanwhile behind the scenes:
- Blizzard developers cackle at each other about how evil they are and how stupid the players are.
I’m kinda sick of covenant abilities already. At this point I think i’d prefer Blizzard just takes them out.
I really hope they’re smarter about it then that. If it turns into that I know I’m not the only who’s gonna NOPE the hell outta here. I mean tuning is one thing but massive swinging changes with a forced grind to “fix” your character thanks to their incompetence? Nah no patience for that. They’re the ones who created the complicated mess. Not getting any sympathy from me about it.
Soulbinds and conduits are way more impactful than the abilities themselves. And it’s been speculated that in later patches we may get new soulbinds as the story progresses, so maybe a covenant with bad sbs gets a new one that is great. There are way too many variables and tuning will wreck any attempt to sim and predict.
My process to decide covenants so far is “wich weekly event will i hate the least?” and so far is the Night Fae garden. All the others seem like will get very old very quickly. Fortunately, NF is good for Arcane and most importantly: has a purple cloth transmog that is not locked into a dress
Simple isn’t the word I would use. Necrolord is by far worst in slot except for maybe Arcane, and even then it’s awful for single target.
Oh thank God, someone as pessimistic and fearful as me!
You forgot in the behind the scenes part about how they are laughing because players say they are incompetent, BUT players still pay $15 a month. More importantly ActiGods are pleased with their minions because they can report high play time to investors since players will have to do a grind to fix Dev’s “mistakes.”
BLASHEMY!!! a mage without their dress is just an over-achieving warlock!
I agree that I’m not excited at all about any of the abilities.
What I want as a mage:
- insta cast new spell that blows things up OR
- insta cast debuff/buff that lets me blow stuff up better
Like, how hard is that to accomplish?
I think necrolord sort of does number 2, but i guess it’s underwhelming?
Ew, no, I look too boxy in a dress. Also, i like being able to see the pants I mog into.
I would cast in jeans and sneakers if i could
The Magequisition would like to know your location, we just want to talk.
loads wand with inquisitorial intent
I agree they all do suck. But the more important thing to consider is which covenant offers the best transmogs and mounts. Since all the abilities suck, mages are literally free to pick any covenant they want. It would have been nice to have good abilities like warlocks, but at least you’re not covenant locked.
You just described Spark, Mirrors, and Necrolord.
personally I’m going necrolord, cuz dem kerrigan wings look awesome, and the skelemage cleave damage looks okay for arcane (my preferred spec)
might spend a month or so as venthyr first though, cuz I do kinda dig their aesthetic as well, and the venthyr party event looks like it might be fun.
None of those are insta cast.
