I’ve been playing mage in battlegrounds and I’m not sure what I’m even supposed to do besides give up at this point. I can’t survive any melee at all. There is no chance to kite because I just instantly die during whatever opening CC they have or they pop some sort of immunity which lasts until I’m dead.

Don’t forget to cast Arcane Brilliance because Lord knows, Alliance pugs could use a few more working brains.

Are you playing frost? Arcane isn’t very viable in BG’s due to no defensives at all, fire is do-able but also isn’t known for survivabilty. I mean you have double iceblock, blink, etc. Mages are actually pretty tanky and hard to kill due to the nonstop freezes.

Fire is high skill high reward. You can 2v1 a lot of classes if you fully utilize your kit/surroundings

What spec are you? Go frost, it’ll increase your survivability. Glyph Ice Barrier. Use Ice Armor vs melee. You can spec into Shattered Barrier to give you an additional root when your shield breaks.
MM Hunters can be a problem for Mages in a BG setting. Dont forget you can stay close to them to prevent their ranged attacks, and you have the tools to do that as frost. Hunters cant use Masters Call or Roar of Sacrifice if their pet is sheeped, another thing to keep in mind.

If you are geared fire is one of the most brain dead bg specs.
I have a mage I occasionally PVP on. BG’s can be rough because Wrath is all about pallies and DK’s… and as a clothy they hurt. If you’re specced correctly you can be competitive. I recommend looking up a frost mage PVP build, I think I got mine from wowtavern and it does well enough. Can’t exactly stop being brought to pound down by 3 DK’s and a feral but, frost is still pretty decent, it’s their best spec for PVP because of the survivability and the kiting capabilities. Also don’t forget about glyphs!

How much resil do you have?
Frost is very solid in BGs but has a high skill cap. 1v1 videos on YouTube are a great place to learn how to use your abilities/CDs effectively so I’d start there.
How? Even as Fire Mage you should be able to succeed… I suggest you watch some youtube how to mage because Mages are amazing in BGs.
Especially Frost, Ice Barrier, multiple novas, deep freeze, poly, cold snap to rest everything!
Well yea, no class can 4-1? if the OP is getting 4 v 1 he’s placing himself in bad situation and needs to learn BG awareness!

I felt the same way as you did until I got resilience on my mage OP.
Just do some WG and get some gear and it’s a whole different story
Frost mages are killer in BGs. I mean as with any class you play in BGs there will be times where you’ll be jumped by the other team and they’ll destroy you, but frost mages in general are very strong against melee.
sorry to say but this seems to be a skill-issue.
Just google for “Wotlk Mage PvP” and watch them faceroll and dominate others in 1vs1 and 1vsX. Watching those videos might actually teach you something or show you tricks you didnt think of yourself.
Hint: just try to avoid montages. Those are pure ego-trips without giving you any information. Life streams are plentyful on twitch also, giving you the opportunity to watch AND ask questions at the same time
The issue is almost invariably 5% gear, and 95% you just not understanding positioning yet…
There isn’t a ranged class in the game that can’t cast outside of charge/intercept or chains/death grip range and your chosen class in particular (mage) also has ready access to snares. Focus on your positioning more, it’ll come with experience, is the answer for your issue as it relates to battlegrounds.
In arenas it’ll be different as you don’t get the space to kite people out as heavily, and arenas will force you to learn how to operate in a more close range environment, but while using the basic lessons learned from bgs about playing against various classes and situations
Don’t try to survive, know that you’re already dead and just focus on pumping out as much damage as you can before you die.
