Anyone have any advice for a new Mage main? I have been playing WoW PvP for a pretty long time, but have never tried to seriously push Arena rating. Been trying solo shuffle and when games do finally happen, I have a pretty inconsistent time. Some games I can do well and land my CC as need and can line up some good kills, other games I can’t seem to do anything effective. Then anytime I am the kill target and die, I get berated by other players that I suck and that I should not being playing a mage. I am inclined to believe them and do just that. Having a really bad time now and this is my last ditch effort before just giving up on arenas on mage.
Reroll melee. Mages are bottom tier this expansion. Arcane is the only spec with even half reasonable damage and frost is the only one with ok control. Fire isn’t even worth considering as you will be shut down the moment you hit combustion.
I personally can’t give any good advice, but I can give some good resources. Watch a Xaryu stream, that guy is insane on mage. He makes it look effortless the way he kites even fury warriors with their insane sticking power. He makes Fire mage look viable and has some great guides on Youtube. You could also check out Venruki and Ziqo, both also really good mages. (Although Ziqo seems to be more classic wow than DF atm.)
Hope you find some good info!
Mage is in a tough spot. If you’re dead set on playing it, I’d recommend looking at some guides from Xaryu or Mitch Jones. They can help ya better than most people.
Im playing a hunter this patch and I find CC’ing to be a mixed bag. breakable CC is always getting broken because of lack of communication. I had to spec into the unbreakable ice trap just so that its functional.
My strategy has been to save my stun or ice trap until i think i can get the healer to trinket it. then Ill try a cc chain after that. Of course if im the kill target, which i am more often than not. im more likely to have to use CC just to stay alive. this is usually against double melee.
As to getting berated for being bad. they are in the same bracket as you and you gotta learn somewhere. 2v2 skirmishes aren’t the same.
Thank you to everyone who replied. After thinking on this more, I am also realizing that it probably doesn’t help that I have been running into a ton of Resto druids who I can’t polymorph and Pres Evoker that are immune to CC. Had one of the resto druids rage at me because I died without using Ice Block up, the reason being that I got kicked on my glacial spike and was melted during the lock out. Maybe I’ll just take a break, try to learn more and come back to it.
Arcane is a super powerful spec if you play it well
Watch all this guys videos
The question he answered at 18:00 will help you a lot
I do t know what spec you are playing but arcane klepto vs rdruid overgrowth hots and evoker nullify shroud is OP
Good point, I should have mentioned I’m playing Frost. Thank you for the advice and maybe I will give Arcane a go after some practice. Thanks!
Arcane and Ele shaman are the dps sleepers. If you leave them alone or don’t line them for anything more than 3 or 4 globals, it’s lights out
putting out the setback beacon, he should arrive shortly
edit: i have been informed that he posted on the mage forums
look for Gpyro’s post, OP, he’s a really good mage
in fact i’d ask for his tag so you can duel him and learn
Because you are left alone to free cast in arena? Please. The best you will get is a moment of breathing room if you are lucky enough for the melee to not have one of their half a dozen closer abilities ready to go.
3 or 4 globals is less than 5 seconds. I’m a shadow, so I know all about being the melee target, but even I (most games) can manage 4 or 5 seconds
