Mage: Arcane vs Frost vs Fire (but mainly Arcane vs Fire)

Another question about mages. I know there’s going to be intense competition about this one (so I’m gonna hold on tight :grimacing:). What’s the funnest and best spec in mages? I mean I always was a arcane person until then frost looks awesome handling stuff with ice. Fire? Dps top. I like frost, arcane and fire but I want to take things one at a time. So help me with this one. What’s the most funniest (or nicest) best spec for now? Thanks !

You’ve been asking the exact same question in a lot of different posts. Just try the mage and see which you like, you’re going to get different answers about which spec is the most enjoyable from each person.

Some like Fire, some hate Fire. I enjoy Frost the most. I don’t really like Arcane, don’t hate the spec, just #3 in my personal rankings.

Your questions just seem like you want to know what will do the highest dps, Fire obv, played by a good player, a bad player running Fire will do absolutely awful, near bottom dps, and probably hate/blame the spec.

The best answer you’re going to get is, play a Mage, try out each spec, watch videos at max level and see which one appeals the most.

I guess let me ask this, is a class that has quite a few buttons to hit, in very quick succession, before you start using your damage spells, something that sounds interesting? If not, Fire is probably not for you. Just off my head from not running Fire for awhile, you have Fireball>Lucid>Rune of Power with Fire Blast as your casting Rune>Meteor> before Meteor lands you hit Combustion and than proceed in to your Fire Blast Pyroblast rotation for 10 seconds or so. Probably a little wrong, but you get the idea. Does that sound fun and something you would like to do every two min?

You’re obviously interested in Mage, but figure out why you are first and than decide where you want to go.

Thanks! I’m gonna test right now.

fire isnt fun until u have the gear

arcane is fun to me , but the spec needs love

frost is cool and u have gameplay options NoIL and whatnot

Thanks! Hmm.

anyway look into how mage will play come SL , BFA is almost done for.

IMO frost is more fun all around. I enjoy the glacial spike crits

Basically:
Fire - Burst building a huge dot on a target, then watch that dot spread to all the other targets melting them. Volatile during burst, but weak outside of it.

Frost - Consistently build up to an enormous nuke every 5-10 seconds. Most steady of the specs.

Arcane - Burst for a series of super hard hitting back to back ST nukes. Then conserve until you’re ready to burst again.

Which is most fun? Depends on which type of damage pattern you enjoy. As for a new player choosing a spec. Fire is by far the most gear dependent to perform optimally. As such I usually recommend players go arcane or frost first.

What I will say for myself… I enjoy fire’s volatility, but sometimes find it frustrating to plan around. As if your group doesn’t work with you… all of your potential just goes down the drain. As such when I don’t feel like dealing with that, I just go frost. Great numbers and very smooth reliable gameplay.

Fire. It is the most fluid and one of the top specs currently, but the caveat is that it requires very specific gearing/Azerite/Essences/Corruption.

-Hyperthread Wristwraps are essential
-3x Blaster Master Traits are essential
-An on use trinket is essential (Badge, Balefire’s Branch, Manifesto)
-Azshara’s Font of Power is recommended
-Masterful Corruptions are HIGHLY recommended and almost essential

Minute Mage:
R3 World Vein Major is essential
R3 Lucid Dreams/Vision of Perfection Minors are essential
R3 Conflict and Strife/Formless Void/Breath of the Dying/Lens of the Focusing Iris (recommended)

LD/Meteor Mage:
R3 Lucid Dreams Major is essential
R3 R3 Conflict and Strife/Formless Void/Breath of the Dying/Lens of the Focusing Iris Minors are recommended

I played Arcane from Legion until this patch. While it holds a special place in my heart, and feels Fluid . . . It has some glaring issues (lack of cleave, movement issues, a bit unforgiving depending on the mistake, suffers with sustainability).

Ideally Arcane is supposed to outshine Fire in ST scenarios; however, because of Fire’s Ignite Dot, movement capability,’and execute . . . it simply falls flat. Going back to Arcane, it feels like a chore, like I have to work twice as hard than I do as Fire.

Hello mage community, I was just about to create a similar topic but since this one is already created and close enough to my question:

I last played the game and an Arcane Mage during the end of The Burning Crusade, all of Wrath of the Lich King, and the first part of Catacylsm before I had to stop playing the game entirely due to real life commitments.

I’ve since settled down, have time to play normally again, and recently purchased the base game. I have tried out this hunter but it’s not my cup of tea, I’ll probably try out the mage again soon.

If my desires are just to heroic raid (guess it’s the old 10man normal difficulty) how viable is it to do so as an Arcane Mage if we are not pushing the hardest content but still want to be a productive team member.

Well I guess fire’s the one.

You’ll do just fine. I wouldn’t worry so much about this expac anymore since there is only a couple months more or less until the pre patch for Shadowlands. But if you do go Arcane into H Nyalotha, you’ll be fine. Any Mage spec is good enough for heroic, some specs just shine brighter on certain encounters.

I enjoy arcane more than fire personally. Shame it’s usually the worst mage spec for raiding and dungeons though. It’s why I’ve never rerolled to a mage lol.

I prefer fire, followed by arcane, then frost.

One error as fire during combust can totally kill your dps and it’s incredibly hard to recover from though. Arcane and frost are more forgiving imo even though they lack the mobility, their dmg is pretty consistent throughout encounters
