Logged in this evening to have some “Disconnection warning code” to briefly flash on the Character Selection window. Once I was able to log in I found that all my general macros were gone while my character specific macros were still available.
This is years of saved macros so I am hoping someone has a fix for this.
They might still be stored on the server.
With the game not running:
Find your WTF\Account\NAME\macros-cache.txt file. Make a backup of it and delete it.
Load up the game and cross your fingers.

You can also open that file and see if they’re in there then copy/paste them into macro slots in-game.
If you have the file, you can shut down the client and then paste that back into it’s original place, start the client again and your macros will be back.
OK. To start I found that Your Macros are stored client side and not server side.
I Found that issue was that for some reason a blank macros-cache.txt was saved probably when the “disconnect error” occurred! Thank the Gods though that Blizzard in their wisdom creates a backup in the form of macros-cache.old which had all my macros and I could restore them with a bit of cut and paste action!
Where did you copy and paste the old files into? I am having the same issue after I downloaded an overwolf addon for logging raids and ever since then I can’t save macros.
So you can see existing macros but not be able to save changes or make new ones? Could be 1 of 2 things possibly
File permissions on the WTF directory and files in it may have gotten borked (used to happen with twitch’s curseforge a lot). Make sure Wow is closed and open Overwolf go to your Wow addons page and click the 3 dots to the right search bar and from the drop down menu select Fix Folder Permissions.
An addon is throwing tons of script errors in the background interfering with the macro save functionality. Start Wow, enter this command in the chat window to see the script errors: /console scriptErrors 1 and then try to make a new macro. If there is a addon-caused script error you’ll get a popup window with a hole lot of stuff in it. The names of the addon that potential issues will show up in the file paths it lists. Disable those addons and see if the problem goes away. To turn the lua script errors window off enter /console scriptErrors 0 in the chat command.
I am not very educated when it comes to macros, but over the last few months, and especially this last week I have made some huge progress thanks in no small part to all of you specifically in these many wonderful forums, so thank you all in advance!
Now my problem…
I seem to be having the same problem except it is with my character specific macros. I went ahead and tried the below mentioned steps, but with no success. Though I reasonably extrapolated that I would need to go further from the “general” folder in the WTF file, and go into the specific Realm and Character, where I did find the similar macros-cache.txt fil for the character, opened it BUT only saw the very old 5 macros that were like from my first attempt of macros a long time ago. /cries uncontrollably
I did the step that Blizz mentions which is Properties and turning off the Read-Only in the General Properties of the WTF folder, and no luck there either.
Please if anyone is able to help me…this sad little holy pally is losing faith quickly!!! /a single man tear slips down his face… All I can say is I’ve already started a Google Spreadsheet and I’m putting in my General Macros, and a tab for each Character’s macros
I’ve been looking around trying to find it, and I’m sorry for my lack of knowledge here, but could you tell me where I could find the “local” macros-cache.txt file? I was assuming as stored on my local drive, but still not finding anything. Thanks so much again for your help!
Ah I didn’t realize that was what the “local” party meant. Thanks for the additional info!
Alas, sadly, it did not restore them. Guess it’s back to the writing board, been putting down what I could remember into my spreadsheet so will test them and correct anything I need to. Guess it (hopefully) won’t take as long this time around.
Thanks again for all your help on this! I had actually read many of your posts earlier while I was researching macros, so feel like a celebrity helped me out here!
