Hi friends! I am looking for support here.
So I really love the Mac experience. I also love gaming on WoW at MAX settings if I can.
Which of these options would achieve better performance:
- Apple M2 Ultra with 24‑core CPU, 76‑core GPU, 32‑core Neural Engine
- Ryzen 9800x3d w/ RTX 4080 Super
I only play WoW, no other games.
Thank you!
Do not buy an M2 ultra, it’s severely dated at this point. it never got m3 refresh and m4 refresh is months away.
As of now, an M3 Max can MATCH an M2 ultra in performance, and an M4 Max actually beats an M2 ultra at around same price point.
If you want to wait til june or so, M4 ultra will be then and that’ll no doubt really destroy that M2 ultra in performance and again at same price. You’d be hella fomo to pay full price for a 2 year out of date machine and then have new one come out in 4 months at same price.
if you need a mac now, It’s actually better to get an M4 max macbookpro to run in clamshell mode that will run circles around M2 Ultra for same price, that you can also use as a portable as needed.
The Ryzen will be better for gaming as a whole if you do change mind later for other games. I hear you on mac experience though, especially if you have other apple devices like iphone or ipad.

Thanks, Omegal you are very helpful.
I’ll wait for the M4 MAX, I didn’t know that was coming out so soon, that’s very cool.
What kind of performance do you get on your M4 MAX Macbook pro?
M4 Max is already out, but the M4 ultra studio is soon.
Awesome, I can’t wait to see how it performs, thank you!
M4 Max actually is ahead of ryzen on cpu end, it’s just behind on gpu to any modern PC dedicated gpu.
when m4 ultra comes out it’ll probably massively lap ryzen.
plus, obviously, PCs get all the apps and games and mac does not.
Personally though on an M3 i’m still skipping m4 cause it lacks one leap i want to see that mac desperately needs to keep up with PC side, hardware AV1 encoder. with youtube and soon twitch moving to that, it makes it difficult on mac side to keep up with encoding needs. I’m HOPING m5 adds it if apple has any sense, but I’m not holding breath. if M5 doesn’t add it I will wait even longer to M6 and if that doesn’t add it I’ll build a PC for my work going forward cause I can’t get left behind cause apple doesn’t keep up with multimedia production needs.
but on topic of op. they’ll likely be happy with an M4 max or M4 Ultra (when new studio gets announced this spring/summer)

might as well ask here
does anyone know how much real world WoW performance goes up between the M chips? im still on a m1
I’m in the same boat, M1 Mac Mini.
I’m holding out for the M4 Studio. Hopefully sometime this summer.

M4 studio now out, but it is a let down cause they don’t have an m4 ultra, instead opted to release m3 ultra as new.
If you want an M4 max studio that’s probably worth it but m3 ultra, I’d pass til M5 ultra next year
Main issue here is that M4 was basically lacks interconnect technology that enables making an ultra.
m5 is supposed to be next big mile stone. I’m probably gonna upgrade to m5 max macbook pro in november if it provides AV1 encoder. if it doesn’t then i’ll hold til m5 ultra following summer to gain enough cpu cores to compensate for no av1 encoder.

I heard the M3 Ultra is going to be on par with a 5080 in terms of performance. What do you think of this?
Wondering if we can get Max Settings on WoW with the M3 Ultra.
I mean, on par with a 5080 for WoW. WoW isn’t really a GPU heavy game that going to take advantage of much of the 5080’s power.
