M.2 SSD question

posted this in tech support as well but figured I’d get a faster response here

I have a decently old Motherboard that actually supports m.2 ssd’s it’s a Gigabyte H97-3DH.

I will be upgrading my rig but probably not for another 6months-1year but I need more space for the ridiculous amount of games I have now between all the apps i.e Blizzard Launcher, Epic, Origins, Steam, and now Amazon games.

My question is, is it even worth getting it on this motherboard or should I wait, I’m leaning toward buying it no and just installing it to my new rig when I make it.

I dont suspect itll be dropped as a standard anytime soon so you should be very safe to grab one. Any board you get in a year will have it.

just buy a regular 1-2TB SSD, they are pretty cheap and will last you forever.

^ This. Just get a regular SSD.

If you have an older motherboard, I wouldn’t bother. The M.2 standard isn’t going away but if it’s using SATA channels (which it is on your motherboard) there’s no real advantage over a 2.5’’ SSD.

Would not not bother, wait till you get a new rig.
I would instead just get a standard SATA SSD for much less and leave the M.2+ for the operating system in your new rigs.

They do last a ridiculously long time under gaming usage. I’ve only worn one out by repeatedly setting up virtual labs for testing, the others for Windows and game storage are showing no signs of dead cells.

okay wow wasn’t expecting these Reponses but thx all…I think i’ll just get another SSD for now

There are different kinds of m.2 drives (sata and nvme). Depending on your motherboard, the drive you buy and what generation of pcie it is will determine the transfer speed of your drive.

However the performance gain is minimal from a ssd or sata m.2 to a nvme drive. So if your transferring large amounts of data then yeah, a nvme on a pcie 4 motherboard would be essential.

If you can do it for the same price it doesnt matter, but if the ssd is cheaper just get the ssd.

Samsung has a 1TB PCIE 4.0 M.2 drive out or about to be out. I’d hold off on it till your rebuild and like these guys said, just grab a sata drive

Just buy this bro and you will never have to worry about space ever again.

I have a 1tb samsung nvme drive in my PC so its already out?

Is it 3.0 or 4.0? Unless you built it very recently, probably 3.0

Sounds good, just let me find that extra $40.000 I have sitting around…
But than I would not have any store mount and wow token budget left.

It also depends on what your board is capable of. There are M.2 SATA and M.2 PCI-E/NVME drives. The SATA drives wont reserve your PCI-E lanes on the board, leaving them free for using the graphics card to its fullest potential at 16 lanes. NVME/PCI-E drives usually reserve 4 lanes, so a low end motherboard would drop the graphics card to using less to compensate.

It always tickles me then someone puts 2 high-end graphics cards into a budget motherboard with only 24 or fewer lanes. The board will drop them both down to 8 lanes to at least get them to work, but not at peak performance.

Oh how I wish!!

Muh bad, it is 3.

I’m in the middle of a build right now. Ryzen is the only board out there with 4.0 support anyway.

Yeah, thats why i bought the ryzen 9 3900x over the intel 9700k.

A friend of mine helped me put the parts list together for this. I’m a software guy, he’s into hardware and security.

Juuuust waiting on the M.2 and the video card to be available. The rest of the parts are in transit.
