so never had this happen before…first Mythic yesterday decided to run a +8 FH-easy dungeon to warm up. No one ever specified they wanted what appeared to be a MDI run, so I was pulling like normal, with some big pulls here and there when appropriate. Then a dps in the group proceeded to pull entire rooms of mobs. Never wiped, just messier. Same for mechanics, stood in everything just for some extra dps (hard on the healer). After the dungeon I was then called trash and the rest of the names in the book because we “only” plus 2’d the key.
My question…how should I be pulling when not specified lol-typically when I tank I gauge my pulls off the healers mana management and do big pulls accordingly. Was just really thrown off yesterday. Thanks all

I tank a lot and I know how you feel. You are doing your best and honestly, really patient for someone else pulling the mob trash. I think, based on what your wrote, that you did what you were comfortable doing. Don’t feel bad for it. It isn’t the end of the world if the group gets +2 or wipes constantly. The world still goes on.
I am not above leaving a group if they are ugly to me or anyone else. There is nothing more off putting than someone constantly going “go go go” or pulling like you described. Us tanks and healers are put in a very bad position. We get jumped on for not ensuring every mythic run goes like clockwork.

Well this makes me feel a little better lol. And you stated that very well, very bad positions indeed. Even more so the healers. Thanks for the reply!
If its a pug and not discussed ahead of time then I guess it’s up to you to feel out how big or small you can pull based on how well heals and DPS are keeping up. Start off with medium or small pulls and gradually get riskier if you start to feel like it’s not threatening.
I will tell them to stop. I will also let them tank it if they do pull. I’ve been petty and left. It’s not just their time, but yours as well.

I usually just put the group on their heels by pulling everything I can handle and let them sort it out.
We have an extremely easy week right now.
Time to show off.

This week is cake, but when I get dps that think they can tank it better I just sit and watch them die.
I use Nogga’s weak aura that puts all the CDs next to a players unitframe. I can generally see what is available to heals and dps to make better decisions on how I pull.

This, is what those DPS deserved OP.

I use exorsus raid tools to guage what talents and azerite your healer has, hopefully in tank healing. I check raider io to see what experience the healer has, sometimes they’re not ready for big pulls cause they never seen a big pull before.
Often low io healers will complain if you pull too large even if you think it’s quite trivial, alot of low io healers freak out and make a lot of mistakes so always be wary of that too. Once I have a gauge of skill level of the team then you know how aggressive your pulls should be.
If you want to see some max level aggressive pulls just watch the Mythic Dungeon Invitational. Dratnos does a bunch of guides on youtube that can help explain dungeon mechanics in more detail. Also raider io have weekly routes they publish every week that can help you plan for routes for groups. There is a bunch of different routes to his that work better with certain groups. Often depends on if what class composition your group has and you do pulls based on that also.
Compositions can range from how many interrupts, stuns, knockbacks, pet tanks slows, nuke aoe dps, funnel dps (dps that get more benefits of more single target damage when there is an aoe pack).
Be aware what cooldowns your healer has as you do an aggressive pull now and you won’t be so aggressive straight away after if healer has a bunch of cool downs unavailable. That can go with dps also, some dps need communication when you’re gonna pull big so they can save cool-downs for it, from the top of my head, shadow priests and unholy death knights.
Don’t be afraid of pulling into new packs after the first pack is only half killed, you don’t need to stop at every pull. But also keep an eye on the healers mana and if it’s running to unsafe percent then don’t pull any more trash. You’ll find different healers handle different pacing with there healing output vs mana effiency. Generally speaking large pulls are good cause dps can just open big dps cooldowns and nuke it but if it gets unsafe to a point your forced to kite (run away from mobs and let them slowly walk towards you doing no damage) 100% of the time then you lose efficiency as mobs start to scatter and dps lose value in there aoe dps. Kiting is good though when healer gets behind on healing you give him a reprieve, but you also need dps to maintain top dps.
Mistake was probably taking someone doing M+16s and up - I’ve found they are some of the worst because they will insist they know better then do bad pulls (exactly what you said) with no understanding of the group as a whole.
You +2d it, I’d actually just put that player on ignore and never play with them again no matter what. That’s how I handle it. I’ve had elitist M+16 players fail M+0 runs… for real, it’s crazy.

Considering that you’re only 385ilvl it sounds like you were pulling at a reasonable pace.
I pull whole rooms sometimes on my main warrior but not on this guy. Need a bit more gear first.
Well, maybe not this week…

reaping+adds+bos lets go…
It’s part of the Puglife and I don’t bother too much really. My chances of playing with this/those players again are fairly thin so it does not triggers me at all. I admit that I sometime “forget” to taunt when mobs are wacking on said player. Oops…
The first pull of Freehold is the perfect gauge though. Before we start, I always ask what kind of pulling the group wants. If they say big pulls, I pull the whole “room” before the stairs. It’s a wipe 2/3 of the time approx. Then I know that people are not comfortable with big pulls so I proceed accordingly by gently letting them know that it might not be the best way to go.
Some DPS will ask to do big/fast pulls when they don’t even put the numbers to justify this kind of pulling. I just /facepalm and ignore them. I can’t even “forget” to taunt because there’s absolutely no way they could pull aggro from me with these numbers.
This is all from a <10 perspective though. Only did a couple in S1 and never actually set foot in a 10 in S2.
Edits: meant to post on my warrior but this outdated DH avatar was apparently selected…

Just let dps who pull die.
You will get sick of telling them to :
Interupt
Not stand in the bad
CC “x”
stand in the good
use los
not to body pull.
And you dont have to make big pulls, but you can just chain pull. Even with Bolstering provided your dps can follow a kill order.

I really like your strategy…
Tank is point man on grabbing all trash. Runs around big nodes and pulls a huge lump. Healer and DPS follow doing what they can to not engage. When all the bundle is ready to be blown up DPS and healer blow cooldowns and rotate stuns. Once the remaining mobs are stun immune the snares are then applied as the tank kites the remaining trash.
That seems to be the MDI method that most are looking for. Of course that means having interrupts on the right targets so it’s not as easy as it looks.
There are many words in this thread. Some are good, some are not good. If you are pulling, you should also be pushing. Pulling AND pushing. This requires great skill and determination. Trust me, warrior, they will follow. You are warrior, you are strength. Jump, charge, throw, spin, whatever you need to do. Your shield is strong, so are you. They will follow because you are strength and rage and they cannot hope to do anything but be ready for the ride.
