M+ Balance, DPS Per Spec 9.1

Few data sets come without limitations. The large size of the differences and correlation between dps output and max M+ score does suggest there is some validity to the list, despite the other sources of potentially unaccounted for variability.

Certainly for me, playing a feral, SP and aff lock, its silly how much easier it is for me to more DPS as a lock in particular.

Overall DPS is a dumb metric for keys as it heavily favors having the highest possible AE and neglects specs that are strong against both bosses and 3-5 target cleave. What matters in terms of DPS is how much time you shave off the dungeon.

Not saying that Feral is great but plenty of melee specs are doing alright right now even though they donā€™t have uncapped AE.

Overall dps IS one fo the central metrics that affects time of keys - the only time that dps distribution matters is when it affects wipes or management of particular affixes.

If you are not wiping and managing affixes fine then the main thing that affects timing is overall dps.

And ya, plenty of melee are doing fine - killing the deeps like windwalkers and fury and havoc. I donā€™t think thatā€™s the point of this thread - its the huge degree of imbalance ā€¦ and thatā€™s real and it certainly affects M+ play for different specs. The game would be better if there was more balance - thatā€™s just a fundamental truth.

It isnā€™t though.

Letā€™s make up a hypothetical example here. You are the sole damage dealer and deal 5k DPS on bosses and 10k DPS on trash. You spend 15 minutes fighting bosses and 15 minutes fighting trash. Your average DPS is 7.5k.

Letā€™s say you increase your DPS by 1k on trash. You will finish up trash 10% faster, shaving ~82 seconds off your run.

Letā€™s say instead you increase your DPS by 1k on bosses. You will finish bosses 20% faster, shaving 150 seconds off you run.

Your average DPS increases by a comparable amount in both cases, but one scenario has far more relevance in helping you time a key.

Hopefully that clarifies what Iā€™m talking about. Stacking three uncapped AE classes is not always the best way to go. Oftentimes having one damage dealer who is good at boss damage is worthwhile for your comp more-so than another big AE damage-dealer.

Sry, but your math is wrong - thatā€™s not how average dps calcs work.

If trash is 15 min and you are doing 10k dps - you are doing 9 million damage. For bosses, you are doing 4.5 million damage at 5k dps. Your average dps is (10kx15+5kx15)/30 = 7.5k.

If you do 1k more on trash, 11k, then you polish off that 9 million in 13.6minutes + 5k for 15 min on boss = (11x13.6+5x15)/28.6 = 7.85k dps.
If you do 1k more on boss, 6k, then you polish off 4.5 million boss in 12.5min. Your average dos is (10x15+6x12.5)/27.5=8.2k dps.

Ya, in your scenario doing more boss dps makes dungeon faster, but thatā€™s because you are doing overall higher dps.
