I’ve been getting this weird error for the last 5-10 days (I can’t remember exactly when). It happens mainly when something happens with my guild (I open the guild window, someone chats in guild, etc). It happens whether I have addons enabled or not. It’s pretty horrible to play this game this way because I constantly get this box I need to close in the middle of my screen. I got so desperate I disabled ALL my addons and it still happens. The error message is:
Message: Interface\FrameXML\GuildUtil.lua:42: bad argument #3 to ‘SetFormattedText’ (string expected, got nil)

Interface\AddOns\Blizzard_Communities\GuildNews.lua:35: in function <Interface\AddOns\Blizzard_Communities\GuildNews.lua:33>
and once you have done that launch the game with no addons to see if you still get error?
If that doesn’t fix it than try deleting the Cache folder and the WTF folder!
Did all of these steps and it didn’t do anything. Like I said it looks like it’s a problem with something Blizzard uses and addons don’t seem to be effecting it. If anything having addons enabled actually makes the problem BETTER (less frequent) for some weird reason.
Just a heads up for any Technical Support person who reads this; so far I’ve:
Reset the WoW User Interface
Deleted my Cache and WTF Folders
Started and Completed the Scan and Repair tool
Defragged both of my Hard Drives (My primary Drive is an SSD and my storage Drive is a normal HD; WoW is stored on my SSD)
Error checked both of my Hard Drives
Updated all of my drivers including BIOS and NVIDIA
None of these things have worked. The only thing that seems to trigger this problem (as I said above) is doing anything related to my guild. If I open the Guild window or someone chats in guild the error appears. I’m on 521 count so this error is happening very frequently, almost to the point where the game is unplayable.
The strangest part yet is it only seems to be effecting Empowerments and not any of my alts. Maybe it’s something about my guild? I feel like my guild mates would be complaining too if they had the problem.
I’m actually having this exact issue too, also tried resetting, repairing etc. Don’t have much more to add since I don’t have a solution other than you’re not alone.
If it’s only happening on one character, Dûbh, it might be custom variables or the character files that were changed by an addon. If the Reset User Interface (helps reset some character configuration files) did not resolve the issue, then try defaulting the custom variables. Enter this into the in-game chat:
/console cvar_default
Make sure to back up anything important that may change like settings, macros, addons etc.
I am having the same issue after switching guilds.
When I try to use that command, I see red text “You do not have permission to perform that function”
/console cvar_default
