Low level Survival needs serious work

So I make this alt to level up for some gray and white transmog drops. I decide to go Survival.

Now, of course, as we all know, here’s what the initial screen at level 10 shows you:

So, of course, I choose my Heirloom Polearm.

Here’s the Survival spellbook at level 10:

Nothing.

Here’s the general Hunter spells I have at level 10:

  • Arcane Shot - requires a bow
  • Steady Shot - requires a bow
  • Wing Clip - does no damage, just slows things
  • Kill Command - for my pet

So I’m forced to ignore the fact that Survival uses a 2h weapon to swap out for a bow, just so I can have more than Kill Command on my bars.

Why did I even get the choice to pick Survival then, if there’s zero Survival abilities to use?

The game should be designed for ALL level ranges, not just max. This is a pretty sad state when my bars look like this if I want to keep my Polearm:

At least give us one melee ability that does damage prior to level 15, eh? I feel like I’m back in Old Republic when it first released, where I watched my pet do everything for me. :stuck_out_tongue:

I would rather just have Concussive Shot again made baseline and every core ranged ability convert to its melee variant while a melee weapon is equipped and within melee range (else, the handcrossbow is used, though at a slight damage penalty).

Arcane Shot <—> Raptor Strike
Steady Shot <—> Ambusher
Concussive Shot <—> Wing Clip

Etc., etc.

That said…

Every spec’s spellbook is initially empty at level 10.

That would be pretty interesting.

Yes, but every other spec I’ve played at low level at least has abilities in their general spellbook that can be used with every spec.

Well, simply put, Survival doesn’t start using melee weapons until level 11. For 1 out of 60 levels to go, its description will be misleading.

Is that dumb? Yes.

Would it be fixed by the above suggestion? Also yes.

Would it be fixed by automatically unlocking the first talent of each specialization? Also yes. (And to the benefit of every single spec in the game.)

This is a good idea. Even if it’s just the first talent at level 1 in the main spec tree, then leave everything else to level 10. That’s fine.

Not that I think melee SV is a good idea that’s implemented well at all, but I’m pretty sure you get Raptor Strike at level 11.

blizzard didnt really consider lvling survival, tho they could do better.

really wish they’d let survival hunters have more abilities not based on talent trees. and let them dual wield…
