Low Level Enchanting Non Functional Due to ilvl Smoothing

I made a post in General Discussion a little while ago and gathered a little more information on what exactly is happening here.

Here’s that thread if you want it:

Basically, the ilvl of low level gear has been changed with the prepatch in an effort to smooth the ilvl curve from level 1-60, since 50-60 is no longer current content. This has resulted in notably higher ilvl on gear at much lower character levels. Currently, a character level 16 Dungeon Drop will be ilvl 51, as seen here:

Now, the issue with that is this:

Pre-Shadowlands Enchants “cannot be applied to items higher than level 50”. This does not refer to character level, it refers to item level.

You effectively cannot enchant anything after character level 15 until you get into character level 50 content.

I understand this largely doesn’t matter to veteran players who will be speedrunning to max level and leveling their professions within the expansion that “matters”, but it still seems unacceptable to have an entire profession just not function for leveling players.

I only became aware of this issue myself because of a player in Newcomer Chat asking for help getting Enchanting to work. They were convinced it was an issue with their Enchanting Rod, but no, it turns out THIS is the issue.

To be clear, this is totally separate from the Vellum issue that Blizzard has already acknowledged. That should be resolved shortly after prepatch and I understand that.

There really needs to be an ETA on getting this fixed. It’s an incredibly poor introduction to the game for any new player who picks up the Enchanting profession. They’ll be unable to use it at all and likely will have no idea why.

Thanks.

I have the aforementioned new player added on Discord and have let them know what the actual issue is and that it’s a recent problem. If it turns out I’m missing something here and everything will magically be fixed on Monday, I’ll tell them.

I really don’t know what Blizzard actually intends as far as low level enchants. Before, you could effectively do enchants up to player level 45 for quest rewards, and green gear off the AH was ilvl50 at player level 41. Do they plan to “allow” low level enchants closer to player level 55 now that 60 is the upper level of Chromie Time? I would prefer that they allow this, but they haven’t said anything about this as far as I know. I would not assume it is going to be “fixed”.

FWIW, it got questionable in the 40s before (depending on what kind of gear you had), but now it’s worse, it becomes an unusable profession before level 20.

Many old enchants are now relatively weak with the change in ilvls. Before the pre-patch, I would buy ilvl 50 plate gloves off the AH if they were cheap while leveling. Base strength was 11, and an MOP enchant could do +8. But base values for gear have gone up quite a bit so the old enchants are a lot less impactful. Once you get to player level 50 you can buy shadowlands enchants (gloves +15 strength) but yeah as you mentioned previously, there is now a big gap between 15 and 50.

The issue goes back to before the pre-patch comes out. The highest ilevel you would normally get then was ilevel 50. You could get higher as soon as you hit level 50 and so, it made a good cut off point. There is a lot of level 50/ilevel 50 issues.

Some gear got boosted to an equivalent ilevels for post pre-patch. However, I had one character who is level 45 still have all gear be ilevel 50 when it should be in the 150’s. I also have a level 10 character who has ilevel 53 gear.

The level 50 problem is that chromie time acts like you are over level 50 in SL by denying you older dungeons. It acts like you are not in some dungeons by refusing to scale enemies up and you stop being able to do dungeons for exp.

Legion gear seems to be scaled very differently from gear of other expansions.
