Did it re open? Was it open the whole time? I forget. Couldn’t we have tried to seal it again.
Lord Kazzak re-opened the Dark Portal to try and kickoff a Legion invasion (which almost occurred under Highlord Kruul but was thwarted by Illidan), and we went in to combat the demons there. The Alliance ended up finding out that the Sons of Lothar were still alive, the Horde ended up reconnecting with the Mag’har refugees, and both of them collaborated with Shattrath to take down Illidan.

Just recently going through the prepatch I remember seeing Goblin commentators mentioning the portal opening and looking to profit off a possible war with the Legion.
The mages at Nethergarde keep contacted the Alliance, Horde and Argent Dawn when they saw it flicker to life. They and the AD responded quickly and are keeping the line from the constant stream of demons coming through while waiting for the large faction powers to mobilize.
