Can Paladins detect demons that are in disguise without the use of artifacts? I know Warlocks with magic but wasn’t sure Paladins could. Also the question is more directed torward average Joe Paladin not Uther, Tirion, or Turaylon.
Well considering there were paladins in the Scarlet Crusade and they didn’t notice the demon chilling out with them the whole time… nah. Probably not.
To my knowledge, there is no case of such a thing. I imagine there are ways of outing disguised demons if one suspected their presence. Of course, generally speaking, if one had experience with the situation, they might perceive signs of such a thing through intuition. It’s likely there would be some clues that would inspire suspicion in those who pay close enough attention, which could then be further tested with something that particularly affects demons, such as Exorcism, Turn Evil or something like that. Cursory research doesn’t include any particular ability that specifically reveals demons, however; closest I could find was Sense Undead.
Yes and no. There are instances where Paladins have had abilities to detect demons. Game mechanic-wise, there was an artifact trait in Legion off the Truthguard called “The Light Reveals.”
Like just about any class, I think there are ones that are newer and significantly more experienced at it. You can detect demons as you grow in your closeness and abilities of the Light.
Regarding the Scarlet Crusade argument, human paladins were not around all that long before Arthas did no wrong but got greedy and picked up the sword. So, the skill level of those paladins is questionable. But it isn’t just detecting a demon but being free from the mental manipulation that would make you question if what you saw was true. This is very apparent in the quest that came out this week regarding Tyr’s Guard. But I won’t spoil it.
So, in my opinion, yes, you can detect demons if you are an older, wiser, skilled paladin. However, you probably would never be as good as an Illidari.
Wake of Ashes (Ret Paladin) stuns demons and undead enemies on top of doing damage. The Light wouldn’t be able to stun the demon if it didn’t know what it was and I highly doubt it goes on visual reference alone.
I could see a Paladin that specializes in detection & divination magic being a cool and unique character.
There is no recorded or referenced ability associated with Paladin’s that specifically detects demons that I could find. Aside from Wake of Ashes originally being associated specifically with Ashbringer, which along with The Light Reveals goes against the op to begin with, one would still need the motive to use it for that purpose.
Of course, one could speculate that the Light could be used to such an end, which admittedly I hadn’t initially considered, but that is still speculation.
5e Paladins have Divine sense allowing them to smell evil in varying degrees.
Id say that such an ability is inherent to the paladin archetype.
Having said that, keep in mind its not detecting a demon outright, just “evil” behavior.
And given that all people do evil things at some point, its probably not as useful as youd think.
I only ask because I was rping as a Satyr Illusionist using arcane and nature to magic to look like a Night Elf. and I thought it was unfair that a paladin wanted to roleplay seeing through the ruse as soon as he entered the inn. We agreed to just not acknowledge each other. I don’t think Paladins have DND’s divine sense like someone said earlier not a single crusader knew Balnazzar was a Dread Lord.
Dreadlords arent regular demons. And Balnazzar was pretty powerful among dreadlords, especially with shadow magic and magical disguise (he even fooled his own brothers to fake his death when Varimathras turned on them.) Even high level warlocks with the Sense Demons spell wouldnt be able to tell.
On top of it, Balnazzar messed with their ability to detect undead(which is a paladin ability in game) and bless holy water.
I see no reason that a paladin wouldnt be able to smell evil like their 5e counter parts but it certainly wouldnt aid you in sniffing out a demon when in a place like the Lamb. Especially in crowded areas.
It does make tracking more interesting, like you know someone farted, but youre not sure who.
The fact is alot of paladin players metagame when they shouldnt and thats the real issue. They have enough auras and ways to consecrate ground to sniff out undead to make things interesting but not op, but thats rarely the direction it goes.
The actual game guide used to say:
This is the call of the paladin: to protect the weak, to bring justice to the unjust, and to vanquish evil from the darkest corners of the world. These holy warriors are equipped with plate armor so they can confront the toughest of foes, and the blessing of the Light allows them to heal wounds and, in some cases, even restore life to the dead. Ready to serve, paladins can defend their allies with sword and shield, or they can wield massive two-handed weapons against their enemies. The Light grants paladins additional power against the undead and demons, ensuring that these profane beings corrupt the world no longer.
While those powers are not clear, I don’t think the paladin detecting a satyr is out of line. I would have played mine the same.
But all conflict should be agreed upon and consented too, and if not, you just ignore it. Which that is what it sounds like anyways, so probably a moot point.
